TOTALED: “Desolate” Single Now Streaming; Lament Debut LP By Blackened Hardcore Outfit Nears March Release Through Profound Lore + Preorders Posted

Profound Lore is preparing the introductory wrath from blackened hardcore outfit TOTALED for release in late March, with the new outfit’s debut album, Lament. Advancing its release, the barren tones of new album single “Desolate” has been posted for streaming on all digital platforms, as preorders for the LP are also posted.

TOTALED materialized in 2017 and recorded its ferocious debut album, Lament. While lyrically ruminating in the abstract emptiness of an impervious void and grappling with paradoxical duality, the auditory gloom of Lament conjures sorrowing burial strings that furiously discharge into an onslaught of punishing resonance wrought with crushing despair, depression, and scavenging hopelessness. Pummeling blasts and d-beats pound into peripherally orbiting shadows of the pixelated black, beneath the pulverizing density of nihilistic bass distortion in a mournful offering of somber funeral strains; the digested celestial nothingness of the eaten, frozen in dimensions of cyclical nooses and gnawing bacterial ether. Conceived incarnations of sorrowful mists from the harvest bereave the morbid light in which we suffer.

Dispatching eight tracks in less than thirty-seven minutes, Lament is completed with ominous cover artwork by Andrew Tremblay.

Endure TOTALED’s “Desolate” through Bandcamp HERE and through all other digital platforms.

Profound Lore will release Lament on LP, CD, and digital platforms on March 29th. Preorders for the vinyl are now available HERE preorders for the CD and digital can be found HERE, and digital preorders can be found at Bandcamp where first single “Transience” is streaming HERE.

CHROME WAVES: A Grief Observed Debut LP Streaming At PopMatters; Album Sees Release Friday + US Tour Begins Today

Midwestern trio CHROME WAVES – containing former members of Wolvhammer, Nachtmystium, Abigail Williams, The Gates Of Slumber, Amiensus, and more – will release their long-awaited debut LP, A Grief Observed, this Friday through Disorder Recordings. The album is streaming early through an exclusive advance stream hosted by PopMatters as the band begins their first tour supporting the album tonight.

CHROME WAVES‘ first full-length, A Grief Observed, sees the outfit making its return with a new lineup, taking the outfit from a sporadic side project to a full-time act. With six dense, mid-paced tracks, the dynamic album weaves through a myriad of sounds and styles, coalescing the members’ influences from black metal, doom, post/alt-metal, dark pop, and more. A Grief Observed was engineered by Niko Albanese with the band’s James Benson and Jeff Wilson, finished with artwork by Wilson.

As the album is prepared for release and the band embarks on tour, Wilson offers from the road, “It took a lot of effort and we waited a long time to release this record and with that came a lot of different emotions… Anxiety. Sadness. Anger. Relief. I hope all of these are displayed while listening to the album. We’re stoked to play the songs this week. Cheers!”

PopMatters is streaming A Grief Observed early, delving into the album: “The six songs which comprise A Grief Observed might closely mirror the emotions that Wilson associates with its impending release. The opening ‘Burdened’ appeals to the meditative sensibilities of shoegaze and post-rock as much as melodic black metal while ‘Past The Lights’ recalls the far-reaching sensibilities of now-defunct progressive darkness masters Agalloch at their grimmest and most frightening…. As one might predict, the titular cut, the record’s centerpiece is a marvelous amalgamation of all that Chrome Waves carries in its metallic arsenal.”

Stream CHROME WAVES’ A Grief Observed at PopMatters RIGHT HERE.

A Grief Observed will be released on Wilson’s own Disorder Recordings on CD and digital formats on March 1st. Find preorders HERE, and see the official video for “Past The Lights” HERE. Watch for vinyl preorders, additional videos from the album, and more to be issued over the weeks ahead.

The five-city trek sees Without Waves providing support on all shows. CHROME WAVES has also announced another tour in April, with shows in Toronto, Ottawa, Portland, and Providence April 4th through 7th.Former Skeletonwitch drummer Dustin Boltjes is filling the drum throne for all live dates supporting A Grief Observed.

Following his departure from Wolvhammer and Abigail Williams in 2018, Jeff Wilson set out to finally make CHROME WAVES a full-time endeavor and brought in new guitarist/vocalist James Benson (Amiensus) alongside the returning Bob Fouts on drums. With a renewed sense of inspiration, the revamped lineup began recording immediately, with their sights set on completing their long-awaited debut full-length, A Grief Observed. In October, the trio issued the first new CHROME WAVES track in six years with “Burdened,” the first single from the impending LP. Several weeks later, the outfit released a non-album cover of Slowdive‘s “When The Sun Hits” while continuing to wrap-up production on A Grief Observed.

THEORIES: Cvlt Nation Premieres New Track From Seattle-Based Death Grind Unit

Vessel is the imminent new full-length from Seattle death grinders THEORIES. Featuring current/former members of Samothrace, Black Breath, Skarp, Book Of Black Earth, and more, with Vessel THEORIES discharge ten rabid tracks of intricate and unforgettable brutality. Recorded and mixed by Andy Patterson (Cult Leader, Gaza, Eagle Twin) at The Boars Nest in Salt Lake City, Utah and mastered by Dave Otero (Primitive Man, Cephalic Carnage, Cattle Decapitation) at Flatline Audio in Denver, Colorado, Vessel is raw, grimy, and absolutely punishing; the sound THEORIES has been striving for since their inception.

In advance of its release, Cvlt Nation offers up “Ill Will” for communal feasting. Issues the band, “We can talk about the content of this song but we’re all actually asleep and none of this is real. The world is a simulation, nothing matters, and we all die alone.”

Adds Cvlt Nation, “THEORIES are back and more intense than ever! If you are a grindcore fan…Vesselis a must fucking have… This collection of songs is the perfect soundtrack for all of the fucked up shit happening in the world right now. THEORIES serve up a huge plate of feral anger on this album and I cannot stop stuffing my face with their putrid riffs.”

Suffer the sonic punishment of THEORIES’ “Ill Will” exclusively at Cvlt Nation at THIS LOCATION.

THEORIES’ Vessel will be released on CD, digital, and vinyl formats via Corpse Flower Records on April 12th. For preorders visit the Corpse Flower Bandcamp page at THIS LOCATION where “Human Vessel Cell,” initially debuted via Decibel Magazine, can be streamed.

Forged in 2011, THEORIES released their Regression debut in 2015 on Metal Blade, a worthy introduction of Lee McGlothlen’s (Black Breath) caterwauling guitar riffs, Kush Karimi’s nauseating bass attack, and the relentlessly creative drumming of Joe Axler (ex- Samothrace, Skarp, Book Of Black Earth). The band toured extensively, appearing at Maryland Death Fest and Southwest Terror Fest, and sharing stages with the likes of Goatwhore, Black Breath, Mutilation Rites, Wake, and Ghoul before coming home and refining their sound into something even more intense and inscrutable. After parting ways with their frontman, the band recruited Wes Harrison on second guitar, and created their new three-vocal attack that further adds to the chaos of Vessel, an album that pulls from multiple extremes to carve out its own grisly niche.

NOISEM: “Downer Hound” Now Streaming; Cease To Exist LP Nears March Release Through 20 Buck Spin

Baltimore grind/crossover killers NOISEM are preparing for the release of their gnarled third LP, Cease To Exist, through 20 Buck Spin in March. With the album’s unveiling growing near, a new audio preview of the album’s sheer ruthlessness has been issued in the form of “Downer Hound, now streaming on all digital platforms.

Keeping with the tradition of the most classic grindcore albums, Cease To Exist is an immediately aggressive attack of confrontational energy, pushing the pace with a withering ten tracks over twenty-two minutes. An eruption of grinding blastbeats, unceasing death-thrash riffs, and an acidic vocal snarl to rival prime Jeff Walker, Cease To Exist quells any notion that NOISEM would ease up with time. If nothing else, the band’s third LP is its most seething, vicious, and inwardly dark album yet. Cease To Exist displays a cacophony of grind, death, thrash, punk, and hardcore, seamlessly blended, blistered, and set ablaze. With Cease To Exist, NOISEM makes a full circle statement of intent; a savage declaration in the face of an ever more bleak future.

Cease To Exist was recorded at Developing Nations by Kevin Bernsten (Integrity, Full Of Hell, Magrudergrind), mastered at Audiosiege by Brad Boatright (Obituary, Integrity, Black Breath), and completed with artwork by Ethan McCarthy/Cool Ghoul Ltd. (Primitive Man).

The band offers of the new “Downer Hound” single, “The opioid crisis has ravaged the globe for centuries. Mass production and pharmaceutical lobbying have caused overdose deaths and use among youth to reach epidemic levels. This is a cautionary tale.”

Stream NOISEM’s “Downer Hound” at Bandcamp HERE and through all other digital platforms now.

Cease To Exist will see release March 15th on LP, CD, cassette, and digital formats through 20 Buck Spin. Find preorders at the label webshop HERE and Bandcamp where prior singles “Eyes Pried Open” and “Filth & Stye” are streaming HERE.

The members of NOISEM will raid Gimme Radio next week! The band is scheduled to take over the airwaves as guest DJs next Friday, March 8th, at 7pm Eastern/4pm Pacific. The band will be spinning some of their personal choices as well as a new track from the impending Cease To Exist LP. Tune in at www.gimmeradio.com!

NOISEM will tour the East Coast in direct conjunction with the album’s release. The Cease To Exist Tour kicks off in the band’s hometown of Baltimore on March 15th the day the LP strikes, followed by shows in Brooklyn, Montclair, Providence, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Richmond, before ending in Raleigh March 21st. NOISEM‘s cohorts in Washington, DC-based No/Más will provide additional hellfire to the entire tour, with Oxalate, Genocide Pact, Bandit, Painbody, and other top-tier locals will be joining in on the action. More extensive live plans are in the works; watch for new tour dates to be issued in the days ahead.

3/20/2019 McCormack’s Irish Pub – Richmond, VA
3/21/2019 The Wicked Witch – Raleigh, NC w/ Old Painless, Cammo, Culling At Wicked Witch [info]

NOISEM returns from the dead with Cease To Exist; leaner, meaner, with a new label and new life. After heavy momentum with their second LP, Blossoming Decay, and subsequent touring including the 2015 Decibel Magazine tour supporting Carcass, Gorguts, and The Black Dahlia Murder, the band seemingly disappeared. However, 2018 saw them return in new form, ready to resume their place among the most promising young bands in metal. This was met with a late-2018 non-album single, “Sin Rash,” released through the Adult Swim singles series.

Riparian EP Out Friday Via Grimoire Records

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s corrosive death metal outfit, RIPARIAN – uniting former members of Wrought Iron, Circle Of Dead Children, Grisly Amputation, and more – will release their eponymous debut EP through Grimoire Records this Friday. Advancing its official release, the record is streaming early exclusively through Svbterranean, alongside a track-by-track dissection of the EP’s grisly ways.

Since their formation, RIPARIAN‘s sound has coalesced into an intense entity, infusing a foundation of classic death metal with technical time signature manipulation, a bit of crushing grindcore brute force, with elements of doom and dark atmospherics infiltrating the mix. The band packs five tracks of caustic, bizarre, filthy death metal into a dense, twenty-five-minute release on their debut, Riparian.

Svbterranean is streaming Riparian early, noting the EP, “consists of five chaotic tunes that meld classic buzzsaw death metal with tech death volatility, sludgy grit, and dark atmospherics. Flesh-grinding riffs collide with slamming beatdowns. Angular, writhing noise riffs morph into dissonant doom marches. It’s devastating and unpredictable from start to finish.”

Stream RIPARIAN’s debut and read the track-by-track dissection of the EP at Svbterrannean RIGHT HERE.

Grimoire Records will issue Riparian on CD and digital platforms this Friday, March 1st; find preorders HERE. Also see the band’s video for “The Nuclear Unclear” RIGHT HERE.

RIPARIAN has booked a hometown release show for the new EP, taking place March 9th at Get Hip Records in Pittsburgh. Watch for additional tour dates to be announced in the weeks ahead.

RIPARIAN Live:
3/09/2019 Get Hip Records – Pittsburgh, PA *Riparian release show w/ Post Mortal Possession, Enfilad, Pegan Youth

RIPARIAN formed in April 2017, their name reflecting elements of their hometown of Pittsburgh, referencing the City Of Bridges, Three Rivers, and the Iron City. Since the lineup’s solidification, RIPARIAN has carved an increasingly wider channel for themselves with higher profile live shows, signing with Grimoire Records, and recording their self-titled debut with the label’s Noel Mueller in Baltimore in September of 2018. Riparian was recorded, mixed, and mastered in September 2018 by Noel Mueller in his Tiny Castle, in Towson, Maryland, with additional vocal recording by Nate Campisi at Mr. Smalls Recording Studio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the cover artwork for the EP handled by Jason Angst/Artisan Pittsburgh.

SYLVAINE: Ambient Multi-Instrumentalist Becomes First Ever Female Artist Nominated for Norwegian Grammy Award In The Metal Category

Scandinavian blackened ambient multi-instrumentalist SYLVAINE — the musical moniker of Kathrine Shepard — has been nominated for the Spellemannprisen, often referred to as the Norwegian Grammy Awards, for her stunning Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone full-length, released late last year via Season Of Mist. SYLVAINE is the first ever female artist to be nominated for the award in the Metal category since they added the category to Spellemannprisen in 2001. A full list of nominees can be found HERE.

SYLVAINE comments, “It’s an incredible honor for me to be nominated for this year’s Spellemann prize in the Metal category! I’m beyond grateful to have Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone up there alongside three other great Norwegian metal releases from last year. It’s the very first time a woman has been nominated in this category, let alone a ‘one woman’ solo project like SYLVAINE, making it an even more exciting and special thing to me.”

SYLVAINE released her third full-length, Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone, in November of 2018. Serving as the sole composer of both its music and lyrics, Shepard — who holds a bachelor’s degree in Musicology from the University of Oslo and has done session work with Alcest, Autumn’s Dawn, and Clouds — manifests a seamless balance between serenity and chaos; between an outside and an inner world; between our human life and the spiritual origins.

Together with recording and mixing engineer Benoît Roux (Alcest, Shane Cough, Anorexia Nervosa) and her two session musicians — her father Stephen Shepard and Stéphane “Neige” Paut (Alcest) — and mastering engineer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Oathbreaker), Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone finds SYLVAINE pushing the duality between beauty and extremity further than ever before, bringing the concept behind the project to new heights.

With a name derived from the word “sylvan” an adjective associated with the woods or a woodland setting and “Verlaine,” among Shepard’s favorite French poets, SYLVAINE was created in an effort to explore the extreme range of emotions human existence has to offer. “We are all from somewhere else and just placed in this human existence to learn,” notes Shepard. “As we enter this plane, we become disconnected with the light we were before and will become after our life cycle on Earth again, which can lead to a lot of different struggles and challenges on the way, leaving me personally with this void; a sense of profound loneliness, which cannot be explained or resolved.” SYLVAINE serves as an emotional catharsis for Shepard, revealing the eternal longing for something more residing within its melodies, capturing the feeling of being trapped and restraint by the human form.

In a review of their New York City performance at Brooklyn Bazaar last year, Rolling Stone crowned EYEHATEGOD, “one of America’s great live bands,” further and accurately elaborating, “There are certain bands who are very good at playing heavy rock or metal music. They’re tight, intense, professional; they project just the right air of macho authority. You might catch them in a club, nod your head and shoot ‘not bad’ looks to your friends during their set, and spring for a T-shirt at the merch table afterward. Then there are other bands, a very small handful, who, through some alchemical combination of execution and attitude, transcend their subgenre completely and connect with the primal root of rock & roll, offering showgoers a hint of that sacred, ‘What in the fuck is happening right now?’ wildness that’s been the hallmark of great American artists from Howlin’ Wolf to Jerry Lee Lewis and the Stooges. EYEHATEGOD are one of these bands.”

ZVI’s “Dear Pink” 7-Inch Single Including Cover Of Portishead’s “Undenied” Out Today Via Nefarious Industries; New LP To See Spring Release

New York City-based ZVI – the eclectic solo project of Ron Varod from Kayo Dot, Sabbath Assembly, Psalm Zero, So Is The Tongue, and more – presents a special two-song single, out today through Nefarious Industries. The new 7″, with the original “Dear Pink” on the A-side and a cover of Portishead‘s “Undenied” on the B-side, acts as a precursory release ahead of the outfit’s upcoming LP.

While previous ZVI material can be interpreted as a minimal experimental drone twist on the traditional singer/songwriter, 2019 ushers in a new era of experimentation with the Deer Pink LP and it’s precursory single. In collaboration with producer Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Anna Von Hausswolff, Boris), Varod’s third full-length ZVI offering as well as its precursory “Dear Pink” b/w “Undenied” single introduce psychedelic analog synths and warped drum machines while almost flirting with pop melodies and forms.

ZVI‘s “Dear Pink” track was engineered, produced, and mixed by Randall Dunn who also helped with sound design of the track, with bass from guest musician Toby Driver (Kayo Dot, Maudlin Of The Well, Secret Chiefs 3). On the single’s flip side, the cover of Portishead‘s “Undenied” was performed, recorded, and mixed by Varod himself at home. The tracks were mastered by Brian Pyle, and the package created with cover art by Paul Cristina, photography by Justina Villanueva, and layout by Greg Meisenberg.

Stream ZVI’s “Dear Pink” single and cover of Portishead‘s “Undenied” HERE.

ZVI‘s “Dear Pink” b/w “Undenied” 7″ single is out today in a limited run of 100 copies on pink vinyl, and through all digital providers through Nefarious Industries. Place orders at Bandcamp HERE and the label webshop HERE, as well as through all digital providers.

The full details on ZVI‘s impending Deer Pink LP will be announced in the days ahead.

Varod is booking tour dates in support of the new material, leading with a one-off gig with comrades East Of The Wall in Long Branch, New Jersey on February 27th. Several days later, ZVI will perform at a Nefarious Industries-sponsored showcase with labelmates Zevious in Queens, New York on March 3rd. April sees ZVI crossing the country for a trek through Southern California with four shows April 4th through 7th alongside Jerkagram, followed immediately by a three-date Pacific Northwest run April 11th through 13th with To End It All and Xiphoid Dementia. Watch for additional tour dates to be announced.

Slowly taking shape over the course of a few scarce live outings and recordings dating back to 2004, ZVI‘s self-titled debut was finally released in 2014. Death Stops Us All followed in 2016, featuring guest vocalist Alan Dubin (Khanate, Gnaw), engineer Colin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice), and the mastering talents of James Plotkin (Khanate) to better capture Varod’s expansive sonic palate.

The past several years have seen ZVI embark on several tours throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe opening for acts such as The Black Queen, Mouth Of The Architect, Jonah Matranga (Far, etc.), and Telefon Tel Aviv, as well as a slot on the 2018 Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands alongside Converge, Godflesh, Zola Jesus, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
