BEDTIMEMAGIC: Nefarious Industries Welcomes Boston Bass And Drums Duo; New Album To See Summer Release

Nefarious Industries expands its peculiar family of musical entities with the acquisition of Boston-based bass and drums rock duo, BEDTIMEMAGIC. The outfit is putting the final touches on their impending new Andrew Schneider-produced Pillow Talk full-length release, which will drop this summer.
 
Ahead of the disbursement of Pillow Talk‘s details, BEDTIMEMAGIC is already posting tour dates for the coming months in support of the record, including several New England dates in July, the Extreme Noise Terrier mini tour in August, and more.

They’re self-described “trash rock”. They perform so loudly that you’ll second guess your current life insurance policy. Their aesthetic depicts monochromatic, broken, distorted, half-man half-canine outsiders wearing glasses. But don’t let those dog singlets fool you: lyrically and musically,
 BEDTIMEMAGIC is a serious band.
 
Their sound is majestic, caustic, plagued with feedback, lush chords, and conflicting rhythms. Sonically, they herald the early experimental days of ’90s and ’00s punk, angular hardcore, and noise rock. Visually, however, they’re two dads in their forties wearing pug wrestling onesies, playing a larger-than-life drum kit, a foot-pedal organ straight out of Black Sabbath or Rush, and a Rickenbacker 4003 bass that’s heavily modified, pumped through a wide range of toxic, custom amplification.
 
The whole concept ultimately doesn’t make sense on paper. Yet live and on recordings, it works. Nicholas Pentabona stands six foot tall, ostensibly rotund. He barks hot breath into a black honeycomb microphone whilst whirling around more than a man of his definition rationally would. The guitar flips behind his head, over his lap, off his shoulder and into the air. Feet tap dance along a thick effects board revealing nothing more than a line of cables drawing more and thicker distortion. Low end frequencies jostle the listener’s precious teeth around, clearing even the most impacted sinuses.
 
“People are paying to see a show,” he says. “Your job is to give them one.” His past is rife with dozens of former acts: The Taste Of Silver, HYEO, Crippling Fear, Fuck Everyone — to name a few. He reckons he’s been doing this music stuff for the better part of nearly three decades. Behind a handmade wall of percussion is Morgan Berns. Slightly taller, bespectacled, shorter in hair and slenderer in build, he broadcasts a mosaic of tattoos. His swings and crashes of the drumsticks are powerful and determined. He craves the desperate chaos of the upcoming beat but forces himself to hold back to stay in tempo. His arms cascade through the air like furious battalions. Berns has modeled himself a peculiar beast of burden; he not only sings while playing drums but also plays a single-octave organ with his left foot. The organ compliments the bass and allows for Pentabona to free from constantly playing the melody. He has earned his stripes with bands such as Coleman, Blacktail, LIVVER, and Bury The Needle, toting musicality through the best years of his life.
 
The two have been a unit since 2014. Both were drawn together over their love of weird time signatures, edited pop-tendencies, funk, and of course, dogs. Typically, Pentabona is free with his speech and candor, while Berns is more reserved and thoughtful to his tongue. Both enjoy food immensely.
 
“We have a lot of things that we want to inevitably say,” notes Berns, “I think, maybe part of what we talk about is that you can’t take things, yourself, too seriously. I’m impressed when people can see the humor in how we’re presenting a stronger concept. So maybe that’s the message: Go fuck yourselves.”

Following their 2014 formation in the Tokyo area, FRIENDSHIP quickly issued their debut demo cassette, and quickly became known for their monolithic live volume levels and became notorious for releasing over a hundred shirt designs. The band also shortly thereafter self-released two CD EPs which both sold out in under a month (recently reissued as I and II on vinyl and cassette via Sentient Ruin), 
 
FRIENDSHIP signed with Daymare Records in 2016 for the release of their debut full-length, Hatred. Recorded in Tokyo, Hatred was mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege and released on CD and digital versions via Daymare in June 2017. The vinyl version and international digital edition followed through Southern Lord in November 2017, and a cassette version was released by Sentient Ruin.
 
Over these recent years, FRIENDSHIP has shared stages with Full Of Hell, Sumac, Primitive Man, Endon, Palm, and many others, including supporting the mighty Sleep in Tokyo, as a part of Leave Them All Behind 2018. In September 2018, the band performed at Bloodshed Festival, as well as seven shows across the UK. Immediately following the tour, FRIENDSHIP began the construction of their follow-up album, which now rears its bestial head as Undercurrent.

THENIGHTTIMEPROJECT: PopMatters Debuts “Final Light” Video As Pale Season LP Nears Release Via Debemur Morti; Band Features Former/Current Members Of Katatonia, October Tide, And Letters From The Colony


PopMatters is hosting the exclusive premiere of “Final Light,” the new single from melancholic Swedish outfit,
 THENIGHTTIMEPROJECT, formed by current and former members of Katatonia, October Tide, and Letters From The Colony. The song is delivered in an official video, weeks ahead of the Pale Season album’s worldwide release through Debemur Morti Productions in late June.
 
THENIGHTTIMEPROJECT‘s second album, Pale Season was recorded at Valley Sound Studio/Nailvillage, mixed by guitarist Alexander Backlund at Nailvillage, mastered by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios, and completed with cover art by Denis Forkas and design by Kadriel Betsen. 
 
With the debut of their epic new video for “Final Light,” which was directed by Dronicon Films, THENIGHTTIMEPROJECT‘s Alexander Backlund notes, “‘Final Light’ is about the relativity of time. It can feel as if life is slowing down while time is speeding up, or vice versa. We all get caught in the clasp of stagnation sometimes, and it’s important to recognize and act upon it. Time is a finite resource. I really enjoy the instrumentation as it captures elements I like from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. You got the roaring organs, the big hair-metal guitars in the middle 8 section together with a grunge-like heaviness and aggression.”
 
Of the new video itself, Backlund offers, “Dronicon Films did an amazing job on the video as well. It’s a different angle, but visually it just works so well together with the overall texture and ambience of the song. At times it kind of looks like the cover art for the album, Dirt, by Alice in Chains, but with an Argentinian viking shaman.”
 
Alongside the video’s premiere, PopMatters writes in part, “…the new single/video from the album spotlights the group’s brand of melancholic progressive rock with sublime riffs and rhythms that will appeal to fans of Katatonia as well as those who appreciate the delightfully strange turns of Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater. Melancholic progressive rock quartet THENIGHTTIMEPROJECT is comprised of Fredrik and Mattias Norrman, (guitars and bass, respectively), who spent fifteen years in Katatonia, and are now also active in October Tide, as well as guitarist/vocalist Alexander Backlund and drummer Jonas Sköld, who both also currently hold rank in Letters From The Colony.
 
The title of their second album, Pale Season does not refer to the eight months where the weather in Sweden is a signature grey. Instead, it refers to those less-colorful patches of memory – years that fly by without anything spectacular happening, which pale in comparison to the vividness of one’s childhood or the early days of romance. This, in other words, is an album for all those moments lost in between the extremes of the emotional spectrum. Elements of Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Anathema, Katatonia, and A Perfect Circle combine to create a record that is sublime in every way. A paean to melancholia, Pale Season is also not without its moments of physical and emotional heft and will launch THENIGHTTIMEPROJECT on to the international stage.

BLEACH EVERYTHING Releases New Zine + “I Killed a Werewolf Once [It’s On Film]” Single; Debut LP Announced + Footage Of Gary Busey And Ice-T Posted

Richmond, Virginia-based hardcore punk outfit BLEACH EVERYTHING has announced their long-awaited impending debut LP, So We Gnaw, now confirmed for release through Dark Operative on July 12th. Preceding the album, the horror-influenced outfit has circulated a previously unreleased demo track, “I Killed a Werewolf Once (It’s On Film),” which is included as a postcard flexi with the second issue of the band’s own zine, which is also now available. Video clips of celebrities Gary Busey and Ice-T speaking in relation to the single have also been posted.
 
BLEACH EVERYTHING‘s 2012 demo track “I Killed a Werewolf Once (It’s On Film)” and the second issue of the Bleach Everything fanzine, are based on the band’s theory that Gary Busey may believe all of his films are documentaries, based on him having the same lines in multiple films. With this in mind, the band secured exclusive video of Ice-T discussing this theory and what he saw when filming Surviving The Game with Busey. On top of that, once Busey was made aware of what was transpiring, he filmed a heartfelt message to the band members where he offers life advice on how BLEACH EVERYTHING should create art together. The zine features essays, artwork, photos, and more from band members Brent Eyestone and Graham Scala, as well as Colin Tappe, Ice-T, Tyler Thomas, and Gary Busey himself.

LIGHT THIS CITY Announces First European Tour Dates Confirmed For September

Bay Area melodic death metal outfit LIGHT THIS CITY announces the band’s first ever European tour, confirmed for the end of summer, as the band continues to support of their acclaimed Terminal Bloom LP, released last year through Creator-Destructor Records.
 
Terminal Bloom, LIGHT THIS CITY‘s first album in a decade, boasts ten tracks that capture their tendency towards extreme melody and intensity, honoring the Swedish sounds of the ’90s. Having spent the past decade performing and touring in numerous other bands, the five members of LIGHT THIS CITY have only honed and shaped their skills and musicianship since their 2008-released Stormchaser. Terminal Bloom was recorded from December 2017 through February 2018 with Zack Ohren (Suffocation, Cattle Decapitation, Fallujah) at Castle Ultimate Studios in Oakland, California, as with their previous four albums, and is wrapped in the vibrant cover artwork of Tony Midi.
 
Following several tours throughout the US and Canada, as well as their first tour of Mexico, and a recent tour of Japan, LIGHT THIS CITY now confirms their maiden trip across the Atlantic. The band’s European Bloom Part 1 trek will begin September 12th and run through Germany, Denmark, Holland, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland, coming to an end on September 21st. Watch for additional tour dates to be announced in the months ahead as the band continues to book new ventures.
 
Drummer Ben Murray states, “We couldn’t be more excited to finally bring our thrash attack to Europe! WOLVHAMMER Announces Summer Tour With Vaulted; New Album In The Works With Revamped Lineup

Midwestern blackened outfit WOLVHAMMER has announced a new summer tour with their revamped lineup, as material for their next album is currently under construction.
 
Following the release of WOLVHAMMER‘s fourth LP, The Monuments Of Ash & Bone, last year, and heavy subsequent touring in support of the record, the album lineup shifted, and vocalist Adam Clemans, bassist Andrew Gerrity (ex-Doomsday), drummer Garry Naples (November’s Doom, ex-Abigail Williams), and guitarist John Porada (Negative Mantra, ex-Abigail Williams, Terminate) welcomed new guitarist Jarrett Pritchard (Eulogy, Exmortis, Pulchra Morte) to the fold.
 
As the new lineup continues to build new material for their next release, WOLVHAMMER has booked a summer tour with Vaulted. The trek begins in Hamtramck, Michigan on June 25th and runs through seventeen cities, ending in Chicago on July 13th.

The Monuments Of Ash & Bone is far removed from the methodical riffing and trudging pace of WOLVHAMMER‘s previous records, eschewing any frills. Merging the black metal tendencies of Enslaved with the mid-tempo sludge of Celtic Frost, the album delivers nearly forty-two minutes of savagery through seven new songs that go straight for the throat; no experimental bullshit, just the sound of rotten flesh and slow decay. The album was recorded and mixed by Jarrett Pritchard (Goatwhore, Exhumed, 1349, Nocturnus AD) at his New Constellation Studios in Orlando, Florida, and mastered by Ken Sorceron (Abigail Williams, The Faceless) – both of whom provide additional guitar tracks to the album – and is completed with artwork by Brian Sheehan.

Avatar Has Landed in Pittsburgh

Come one, come all. Hear the glorious tale of how our King and Avatar have conquered Mr. Smalls on their headlining tour.

Tuesday, May 21st, Avatar came to town fresh off a successful trek at Sonic Temple Festival. This theatric Swedish band is no doubt one to see with your very own eyes. 

Before the concert had started, there was an intro track playing as an announcement noting that the King has entered the building. Followed by that, the lights had dimmed. Moments later the lights began to shine on the stage where the King slowly arose being seated on his rightful throne. Fans were chanting and cheering. The rest of the Motley Crue came out and began to play “A Statue of the King”. Frontman Johannes came up front to his podium to begin what would be such a momentous night.

The entire setlist was unforgettable. Only knowing mainstay songs coming into this performance took my expectations of what to expect and glorified it to one hundred. When songs like “The Eagle Has Landed” and “Tower” were up to turn, I was blown away. A moment that made me grin like a Cheshire Cat was when during the song “Puppet Show”, I had turned back to see a sock puppet being lifted up by a fan. 

Throughout the entire concert, Avatar had this energy that I had never seen in a band. The flow between the band members was a sight I absolutely indulged in. The love between Avatar and their fans, the involvement between the crowd and band is truly an amazing sight.

What makes Avatar different from the rest is that they are unapologetically themselves when it comes to their music and characters. They embrace being divergent. They relish in it. This was made clear when Johannes had made a few speeches in between songs. As someone who has felt “different” her entire life, it resonated with me profoundly. I highly welcome such bands who dare to be “the outcasts”. Who defines who they are, and are not afraid to be just who they are.

If the chance ever comes where Avatar is in your city, I highly implore you to go see them. Give them all the love and support. These lovely gentlemen were some of the most relaxed and grounded people I’ve seen in a long time. They deserve all they have and so much more. Tim, John, Henrik, Jonas, and Johannes were so attentive to the fans after the show. As someone who is an avid concert goer, I love seeing the band being so dedicated to their fans. 

I look forward to seeing them grow and migrating to bigger venues in the future. This will allow for so much more to be done with their stage set up. I can tell its begging for that day. No doubt in my mind, that time will come, and soon.

DEAD TO A DYING WORLD Begins West Coast Tour With Dawn Ray’d This Week; Elegy Full-Length By Texas Dark Metal Septet Out Now Through Profound Lore

Texas-based dark metal septet DEAD TO A DYING WORLD begins their West Coast US tour in support of their acclaimed new Elegy album this week. The epic double-LP opus saw release through Profound Lore Records in April amidst a wealth of praise from media outlets and listeners which continues to pour in from around the globe.
 
DEAD TO A DYING WORLD‘s West Coast tour begins this Friday, May 24th and runs through June 1st. The massive band lineup will be joined by guest musicians Emil Rapstine of The Angelus, who appears on the Elegy album, as well as Natalie Kahan of Wildspeaker for all dates on the new tour. The tour will run clockwise up the western edge of the country with their friends in Dawn Ray’d on their way to perform at this year’s Northwest Terror Fest in Seattle, joining the likes of Bongzilla, Wolfbrigade, Indian, Pig Destroyer, Gadget, Indian, Cirith Ungol, Thou, Spirit Adrift, and many others.
 
During the week of the tour, DEAD TO A DYING WORLD and Profound Lore will be donating all Bandcamp proceeds from the album to reproductive justice groups and abortion funds – specifically to the Yellowhammer Fund, ARC Southeast, National Network Of Abortion Funds, and Whole Woman’s Health Alliance – in response to the abortion ban laws being passed in recent weeks.
