Death Cab for Cutie Comes to Pittsburgh

DCFC2

Forming in the late 90s’ comes the band Death Cab for Cutie. Originally a side project for frontman Ben Gibbard at the time… twenty so years later and the project has flourished into a well known modern group. Their unusual mixture of instrumentals and vocals proves for a smooth flow of music.  This current tour is in support of their most recent release “Thank You For Today”. The record is blended beautifully. It offers such an easy and peaceful listening. Perfect for a car ride or a lazy day.

Which was exactly what I did driving to the concert. Rolling up the venue and seeing the concert go-ers lining up was truly exciting. As someone who normally goes to hard rock or metal shows, it was surely a change of pace and atmosphere. The audience ranged from those in high school all the way up to people in their fifties. DCFC is a band that appeals to all ages.

The opener for Death Cab was a band called “Lala Lala”. I was truly enjoying myself when they came on. The lead singer Lillie has a beautiful voice. If you’re looking for a band to kick back and listen to, I highly recommend you give them a chance.

Lillie1

Once when “Lala Lala” wrapped up, DCFC came on around twenty minutes later. They opened up with “I Dreamt We Spoke Again”, which is a perfect starter. The lights and music hit the mood just right. The show being outside, I was unsure whether or not the stage production would suit the outdoors, I was proven wrong. DCFC did an excellent job. The energy and performance were phenomenal. I’m sure thirteen-year-old self would be extremely pleased that I finally got to see one of her favorite bands from when she was in high school. If you ever have the chance and DCFC rolls around, definitely go see them. They put on a fantastic show.

HARM’S WAY continues to tour in support of their most recent full-length, Posthuman, out now on Metal Blade Records. Having grown with each subsequent release, Posthuman is a devastating addition to HARM’S WAY‘s catalog. Exclaim! hails, “an impressive display of brute force that keeps its momentum up from beginning to end.” Pitchfork writes, “The swole Chicago hardcore band’s latest album shows their raw strength while adding shades of industrial and groove metal for character.” Adds Metal Injection, “HARM’S WAY Posthuman gives fans absolutely solid hardcore material, promising utter chaos while providing some welcoming blends in variety in regards to tone and sound. From beginning to end, Posthuman is pure savagery and an early contender for one of the year’s heaviest albums.”

Earlier this year, HARM’S WAY released a remix EP of Posthuman titled PSTHMN. Commented the band, “PSTHMN is the evolutionary counterpart to our 2018 full length, Posthuman. It includes four remixed and reinterpreted tracks by artists that have continually inspired and influenced the band throughout its tenure. These artists include Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu, JK Flesh), Andrew Nolan (Intensive Care, The Endless Blockade, Column Of Heaven), and Sanford Parker (Mirrors For Psychic Warfare, Corrections House). Additionally, the release includes a reimagined version of the track ‘Unreality’ by our very own bassist, Casey Soyk. PSTHMN follows the vision of Posthuman and sheds light on influential aspects that have shaped the sound and aesthetic of HARM’S WAY.”

He Is Legend at the Manchester Hall

North Carolina based band, He is Legend, recently came out of hiatus to tour as a supporting act with The Damned Things and Crobot.  They recently made a stop at Manchester Music Hall in Lexington, Kentucky to promote their highly anticipated sixth studio album, White Bat.
Fans lined up early for the show, chattering with excitement about the band’s long awaited return.  Although He is Legend was technically billed as a supporting act for this show, it was clear that the majority of concert goers were looking forward to their performance most of all.  It’s easy to understand fans’ elation after having experienced their live spectacle.
Opening up with their first single off the new album, also titled White Bat, the band’s energy was palpable from the very first notes of the show.  With its chaotic drums, heavy riffs, and horror punk vibes, White Bat was the perfect song to get fans moving and banging heads.  Lead singer Schuylar Croom worked the crowd, even striking a bat-like posture at one point during the act.
The setlist was brief with only eight songs, but this didn’t seem to phase the crowd.  Fans moshed and jumped to classics like The Seduction, Everyone I Know has Fangs, and I am Hollywood.
Following the show, members of the band, including Croom and lead guitarist Adam Tanbouz, mingled with fans, took pictures, and signed autographs.
He is Legend is preparing to embark on a headlining tour in June to promote their latest album.  The tour will kick off with a celebratory show in Wilmington, North Carolina on the 28th, the same day White Bat drops.  Additional tour dates and the music videos for White Batand their latest single, Boogiewoman, can be found below.

SUNN O))) co-founders Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson set out on a path toward a new album production for Life Metal. Following pre-production sessions as a trio with T.O.S. on Moog at Dave Grohl‘s 606 Studios in Northridge, California, in July 2018, SUNN O))) spent just over two weeks in Chicago at Electrical Audio (Studio A) with Albini at the helm. The album was mastered and the lacquers cut from tape in October by SUNN O))) ally Matt Colton at Alchemy in London. The LP version is a AAA album, recorded and mixed on tape via a completely analogue production, from the input of the band’s amplifiers and the air coming off the speakers in front of the microphones to needle touching the pressed vinyl on your turntable.

Life Metal features guest contributions from composer/musician/vocalist Hildur Guðnadóttir, longtime friend Tim Midyett (Silkworm, Bottomless Pit, Mint Mile), composer Anthony Pateras, and more. The album is wrapped in amazing, Renaissance style paintings by visual artist Samantha Keely Smith, and bold, imaginative photography from Ronald Dick.
