GHOUL released their Dungeon Bastards studio offering in 2016 via Tankcrimes. The record consumed Billboard Charts upon its first week of release debuting at #11 on the Heatseekers Chart, #13 on the Top Vinyl Albums Chart, #13 on the Hard Rock Chart, and #27 on the Independent Albums Chart. Produced and mixed by Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City) at Antisleep Studios in Oakland and mastered by Dan Randall (Impaled, Annihilation Time, Fucked Up, Necrot) at Mammoth Sound in San Francisco, Dungeon Bastards wields eleven hemorrhage-inducing tracks of the band’s now-patented Creepsylvanian splatterthrash.

Dungeon Bastards is out now on CD and digital formats. Tankcrimes recently repressed the LP edition (now available limited-edition splatter or blue vinyl) which includes a gatefold jacket that opens into the Dungeon Bastards board game. Players take turns advancing through a Creepsylvanian map; the first one to get to end of the map and jump the Wall Of Death wins. CD orders are available HERE, vinyl HERE, and digital HERE where the record can be streamed in full.

Most recently, GHOUL united with Brooklyn-based MC/Uncle Howie Records owner, Ill Bill (Non Phixion, Heavy Metal Kings) with Goretex (Non Phixion), for a two-song split 7″, out now via Tankcrimes! Said Riot Nerd of GHOUL‘s portion, “With new releases on the way from seminal thrashers At The Gates, The Crown, and The Haunted this year, GHOUL proves with one track that they still wear the gore rotted championship belt in the land of speed and chug, and the eerie and verbose cinematic stalking of the Ill Bill contribution is just icing on the Creepsylvanian cake.” For physical orders, visit the Tankcrimes merch table HERE.

“For those who lived through Nancy and Ronald, S.O.D., and D.R.I., GHOUL‘s sound is like finding a shoebox of discontinued candy, all of it fresh to eat. That said, the gonzo midnight movie vibe and cartoonish energy on Dungeon Bastards perfectly articulates the apocalyptic anxiety that we’re all sharing…” — Decibel

YATRA: Maryland Doom Trio Premieres “Smoke Is Rising” Through MXDWN; Death Ritual Debut LP To See Early January Release Via Grimoire Records

Maryland psychedelic doom trio YATRA presents “Smoke Is Rising,” the latest single from their impending debut LP, Death Ritual. As the album approaches its early January street date through Grimoire Records, “Smoke Is Rising” has been issued through a premiere at MXDWN. YATRA has also announced a wide array of tour dates for December through April.

YATRA‘s sound is a journey into mountainous sounds, transcending into the deep forests of primeval times. Born from the ashes of Blood Raven, the new three-piece emerged in 2017 as frontman Dana Helmuth’s new vehicle to embrace the darkness and doom. Confident in Maria Geisbert and Mike Tull as his new rhythm section, Helmuth’s inspiration was fueled exponentially. YATRA‘s full-length debut, Death Ritual was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Grimoire Records’ Noel Mueller in August of 2018. The artwork features four mixed-media pieces by Aki Pitkänen, layout by Mueller, and the hand-drawn logotype by Helmuth.

With the new song premiere, Helmuth notes, “‘Smoke Is Rising’… at the time I wrote this there were a lot of really dark and heavy things going on in my life. I really felt like the lyrics I wrote ‘marching dead under crimson skies, rivers they rise up and swallow me’ … so I began to realize that I needed to put everything I had left into this burning sacrifice of YATRA, and I believed smoke would rise from this, and that kingdoms would fall.”

Explore YATRA’s “Smoke Is Rising” via MXDWN at THIS LOCATION.

Death Ritual will be released on CD and digital download via Grimoire Records, and as a limited-edition vinyl release directly from the band, on January 4th, 2019. Find preorders where the prior single “Black Moon” is also streaming HERE.

YATRA has also announced a long line of shows to round out the year, with additional dates already booked into April in support of Death Ritual. The band will play across their home state of Maryland several times in December, with shows in Baltimore on the 7th, Frederick on the 15th, and again in Baltimore on the 28th, with a trip to Brooklyn, New York scheduled for December 21st.

Watch for audio samples, tour dates, and more to be posted shortly.

YATRA Tour Dates:
12/07/2018 The Sidebar – Baltimore, MD w/ Witching
12/15/2018 Guido’s Speakeasy – Frederick, MD w/ Backwoods Payback, Byrgan
12/21/2018 Lucky 13 Saloon – Brooklyn, NY w/ Decap Attak, Sigils
12/28/2018 The Depot – Baltimore, MD w/ Byrgan, The Osedax, Erlkonig
1/15/2019 Sidebar – Baltimore, MD w/ Toke, Greenfiend, Tombtoker
1/16/2019 Arlene’s Grocery – New York, NY @ Ode to Doom w/ Clouds Taste Satanic, Matte Black, Sleeping Village

“We had moved back to the country, into a small cottage in the woods, with no plumbing for the first three months we were there,” describes YATRA‘s founder Dana Helmuth on the writing of Death Ritual. “We had an outhouse and outdoor shower. It was primitive, and it was during that time that I started writing all the material for Death Ritual. The solitude and the darkness of the night put me in a space of prolific writing and I wrote all eight songs in a month. We rehearsed three times a week and immediately started playing live shows regularly in Baltimore and New York City. We were able to channel that same darkness in the writing, also into our live shows, and the positive response was tremendous and really pushed us harder on our journey.”

In fact, “journey” is exactly what YATRA symbolizes. While traveling through Nepal and the Himalayas by motorcycle in 2013, Helmuth learned the native word “yatra” which means journey or pilgrimage, which he later recalled as the namesake of this new doom trio. The band’s eclectic sound combines the harsh, distorted vocal sounds of black metal over slow, heavy doom drones, fuzzed-out sludge riffs, and a tight rhythm section maintained by Maria Geisbert on bass and Mike Tull on drums. YATRA‘s sound clearly conveys heavy worship and dedication to tone. Helmuth’s lyrics draw from fantasy and are influenced by the writings of Howard, Lovecraft, Auel, Tolkien, as well as many references to Norse mythology and Pagan ritual. No love or politics. Fans of Electric Wizard, Cough, and Sleep will find plenty to love in Death Ritual.

NEUROSIS To Headline Supersonic Festival 2019 In July; Tickets On Sale Now

Supersonic Festival is immensely proud to announce iconic pioneers of heavy music, NEUROSIS, as the headliners of their fifteenth installment taking place July 19th through 21st.

Showing their discontent with convention from the very beginning, NEUROSIS revealed what would become an instinct for transformation in sound and scope. Over the collective’s past eleven albums and their utterly memorable live shows, the band has invited listeners to join them on the path their music carved. Going beyond the remarkable, NEUROSIS has become unforgettable.

For over thirty years, NEUROSIS has relished in the unpredictable and embraced the unknown possibility of where the music was capable of taking them. For fifteen years, Supersonic has been guided by the same adventurous spirit, and fiercely independent principles, playing host to groundbreaking musicians and artists from around the globe, from LCD Soundsytem, Anna Von Hausswolff, Holly Herndon and The Bug, to Goblin, SUNN O))), Jenny Hval, and Godflesh, to Mogwai, Gazelle Twin, Moor Mother, and Shirley Collins. Supersonic is delighted to fulfill a life-long dream in welcoming NEUROSIS to Birmingham next July.

NEUROSIS Steve Von Till adds, “It’s been a long time coming, but finally NEUROSIS is teaming up with the folks at Supersonic for a special event in Birmingham, a holy land for heavy music. We have known Supersonic to be kindred spirits since we first met years ago to discuss our mutual commitment to supporting independent, emotionally intense artists. Their lineup over the years has mirrored our own appreciation for eclectic sound with a depth of spirit and passion, creating a platform for some of the most interesting and inspired artists around. This is not to be missed.”

Supersonic Festival 2019 will also run in parallel with a major Home Of Metal exhibit — celebrating the forefathers of metal — Black Sabbath. This immersive exhibition will feature portraits from the Home of Metal Black Sabbath fan archive, historical photos, ephemera, and memorabilia sourced directly from the band members, joining the dots between music, social history, visual art, and fan cultures to produce a new perspective on heavy metal. One that is celebratory, eschews notions of high/low art and joins audiences and performers together. See more on Supersonic Festival HERE and HERE.

NEUROSIS will also team up with their friends in Converge for Leave Them All Behind 2019 when both bands tour across Japan together for the first time. Watch for additional NEUROSIS tour dates to be announced in the months ahead.

THE SIXTH CHAMBER Releases Official Music Video for “Entrance to the Cold Waste” Featuring STANTON LAVEY & MAHAFSOUN

6CETTCWEPCOVERHIRESCROPPED

Gothic Metal Band THE SIXTH CHAMBER has released the official music video for “Entrance to the Cold Waste.” Filmed in the wastelands of Death Valley, CA, “Entrance to the Cold Waste” features STANTON LAVEY (grandson of Church of Satan founder / Satanic Bible author ANTON LAVEY, whose character featured prominently in this season’s AMERICAN HORROR STORY) and belly dancing by MAHAFSOUN.

“With ‘Entrance to the Cold Waste’, we sought to create a portal of escape from the drab norms of daily reality we tend to become trapped in and provide a passageway to a nightmare realm of sublime dreamscapes,” says Rahne Pistor, Sixth Chamber lead vocalist and founder. “I wanted to create a world as it exists within my deeper consciousness rather than as it seems in the confines of the waking world.” – Rahne Pistor

Behold the ancient rites of unspeakable black magic mystic horror!

Mythical Los Angeles gothic doom proto-metal mysterians The Sixth Chamber have completed a new single and music video nightmare trip – shot in the vast, tortured wastelands of Death Valley, California. Part Lovecraft and part Pasolini, the sonic and visual dream quest stars gothic metal bellydance YouTube sensation Mahafsoun as well as Stanton Lavey (grandson of Church of Satan founder/Satanic Bible author Anton Lavey) who aptly plays the role of a crude, heathen elder god. Directed by Constantin Werner.

Ghost Performs in Sin City

IMG_7262

Ah Vegas.  Full disclosure, this is only my second time here, gambling isn’t my thing and, generally, neither are manufactured experiences.  There is, however, an allure, a temptation to revel in the tawdry displays of tourists on Fremont, convincing themselves they’re being entertained, convincing themselves that the shiny dress, the cheap suit, the almost fashionable, is real – even if it’s just for a moment.  The exuberance can so easily feel manic and desperate – a high that takes a wrong turn and becomes dark, feverish, and somehow sad.

But there are moments.  Moments when people come together to experience something they deeply love, that the bad trip is forced back behind joy, excitement, and connections with people who share a passion.

Ghost is a band that brings out that passion and excitement.  The community that gathers at The Joint in The Hard Rock is primed for connections – connections with each other and with the band.  Vegas is a notoriously difficult venue.  Artists have an audience that might have picked up the tickets at random, and there for a myriad of reasons where the show isn’t the primary focus.

Ghost, though, brings fans to them; as easily across geography as emotionally during a show.  Current front persona Cardinal Copia, deftly draws the crowd into his sermon – never stranding the audience in a lull, but carrying them through the changes in tempo with witty banter, and faith that, wherever he’s taking them, the journey will be rewarding.

IMG_7319

Cardinal Copia’s persona bridges priest and lounge singer in a playful, joyous manner that, somehow remains unironic.  And while he may lose a few of the less faithful during his earnestly delivered monologue on the cycles of depression and hardship to highs and loves that we all experience; more are with him.  It might be partially this supportive, positive, fun philosophy that backs all Ghost does that engenders such love from their fans.

It is the passion from the fans that is partially responsible for the current rise in Ghost’s popularity.  Passion, and a fun pop-rock accessibility that has been missing from the larger music scene since the eighties.  A pop rock that is backed with skilled musicians; clever, articulate songwriting; and a colorful, engaging narrative live show.

“Are you with us?” is a mantra of sorts for Ghost, and for Ghost fans. A question that is always replied with an emphatic affirmative.

iDKHOW Debuts #1 on Billboard’s Heatseeker Chart

i DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME (iDKHOW), the once and future alt/pop band fronted by former Panic! At The Disco bassist Dallon Weekes, saw its debut EP 1981 Extended Play (Fearless) debut in the Number One spot on the Billboard Heatseeker chart this week. The album also came in at #8 on Billboard’s Current Alternative chart and #11 on the Current Rock Chart.

The out-of-the-box success of 1981 Extended Play is fueled by six songs that Bass Player called “Catchy concoctions of art rock, space rock and alternative with swaggering charismatic pop vocals,” that have already accumulated a very impressive 15.2-million Spotify plays.  In addition, the lyric video for the EP’s lead-off song, “Choke,” has also accumulated 8.3-million YouTube views.

iDKNOW – Weekes and drummer Ryan Seaman – is currently on a North American tour with Waterparks, playing to packed houses and winning over critics:  “When iDKHOW went into a fan favorite, ‘Choke,'” wrote New Noise,  “the fans went crazy singing along to every word, and you could truly feel the energy in the room – the fans LOVED iDKHOW.”  Remaining dates for this tour are as follows:

24  Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor, Reno, NV

25  Ace of Spades, Sacramento, CA

ABOUT I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME (iDKHOW)

I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME – Dallon Weekes and Ryan Seaman – is a musical entity with a conceptual backstory.  The name, a key to their remarkable odyssey, is taken from a piece of dialogue from the 80s classic film “Back To The Future.” They are a lost act from the late 70s early 80s that never quite made it, but their rare and long-forgotten music has recently been unearthed thanks to today’s technological resources.  Weekes and Seaman are just starting to resurrect the songs and innovative spirit of iDKHOW for a new generation starved for creative risk taking and unbound joy.

Before Pete Sandoval recorded Morbid Angel‘s first album, 1989’s Altars Of Madness, he performed on two demos and a split album with his original band TERRORIZER. Today, the group’s 1989 full-length debut World Downfall is still considered a pinnacle for death metal and grindcore, featuring impossibly fast blastbeats and double-bass drumming along with a blitzkrieg attack by late guitarist Jesse Pintado(Napalm Death), and ex-vocalist Oscar Garcia (Nausea). The 1989 lineup was rounded out by Sandoval and then-fellow Morbid Angel bandmate David Vincent on bass.

Over the next twenty-three years, Sandoval took time between Morbid Angel albums to continue working with TERRORIZER, recording two more cataclysmic full-lengths, 2006’s Darker Days Ahead and 2012’s Hordes Of Zombies. And now, another six years down the burning highway, TERRORIZERis back with Caustic Attack, their heaviest and most eclectic album to date.

Sandoval has long been known as one of the fastest players in death metal – the pioneer of blastbeats – and he doesn’t hold back on Caustic Attack. At the same time, even the fastest songs are tighter and more precise than TERRORIZER have ever been thanks to veteran producer Jason Suecof, who’s painstaking method of recording showcases Sandoval and his team at peak capacity.

The proof is in the pummeling. There are flesh-shredding grindfests like “Turbulence,” “Caustic Attack,” and “Poison Gas Tsunami,” each of which swoops down, destroys, and depart in under-two-minutes. Then, there are the nearly five-minute-long tracks, including “Infiltration” – which slows to a thunderous breakdown before ramping back up to hyper-speed – and “Wasteland,” a global conflagration with undeniable guitar hooks and a lethal mid-song chug that reveals previously unexplored diversity and depth.

“If extreme metal is Sandoval’s ministry, Caustic Attack is the sort of triumph that’ll have you taking a look at that higher power.” – Decibel

“Blast-beat expert Pete ‘Commando’ Sandoval shows why he still excels at the style he helped to perfect…” – Rolling Stone on Caustic Attack’s title track

“If you’ve ever accidentally spilled anything super-acidic on yourself, it’s not hard to imagine ‘Invasion’ as the panicked soundtrack to searing flesh. The band ain’t called ‘TERRORIZER‘ for nothing.” – MetalSucks on “Invasion”

“…a minute-long onslaught of blasting fury and muscular staccato riffs….” – Revolver on Caustic Attack’s title track

Caustic Attack…is everything devastating you’ve ever loved about TERRORIZER and then some.” — Metal Injection

“…a fine offering that few will match for its savagery.” – Overdrive Magazine

“…this album rips from start to finish.” – No Clean Singing

“…the absolute Grandaddies of grind…” – Antichrist Magazine

“…one of the genre’s finest efforts of the last few years if what you fancy is straight-up no bells and whistles extreme metal.” – Metal Wani

“Sandoval is still the benchmark for all extreme metal drummers and percussionists.” – Metal Obsession

TERRORIZER:

Pete Sandoval – drums
Lee Harrison – guitars
Sam Molina – bass/vocals

SOFY MAJOR: Decibel Magazine Premieres Total Dump Title Track; LP To See Release In The US Via Corpse Flower Records This January

Total Dump
is the forthcoming new full-length from French noise rock trio SOFY MAJOR. Scheduled to drop this January in the US via Corpse Flower Records, the band’s long-awaited fourth full-length and follow-up to 2015’s triumphant Waste LP was recorded and mixed by Dave Curran (Unsane, Big Business) at Black Box Studios, mastered by Carl Saff (Fu Manchu, Rosetta, KEN mode, Child Bite) at Saff Mastering, and delivers eleven rocked out, Big-Muff-powered tracks of relentlessly raw, driving, melody. Fans of Unsane, Harvey Milk, The Jesus Lizard, Coliseum, and the like pay heed.

In advance of its release, today Decibel Magazine is premiering Total Dump‘s opening title track. Relays the band, “‘Total Dump’ is the opening track of the record, and it’s also the album title. I think no matter who you are, where you live, what you’re going through, occasionally, you’ll have this feeling that it can’t get worse, both in your life and in general; it’s the ‘total dump’ point. Ultimate level of shit and trouble. Rock bottom. And the best thing to do, as hard as it is, is to accept it and deal with it. Only then can you try to climb back to the top. Mentally, physically, etc. All this made sense to the three of us as we went through some hard and challenging times, as individuals and as the band, during the writing and recording process of this album. This band and its members have been tried and tested a lot through the years. We’re good guinea pigs I guess… or suckers!”

Hear “Total Dump” at Decibel Magazine at THIS LOCATION.

Total Dump will be released January 25th on limited edition vinyl via Corpse Flower Records with Deadlight Entertainment and Antena Krzyku handling the CD and vinyl releases in Europe respectively. Corpse Flower’s vinyl edition will come in three color variants – 100 gold, 100 mustard yellow with baby blue splatter and 100 half tan/half sea blue. For preorders, visit THIS LOCATION where first single, “Strike,” can also be streamed.

Total Dump is the latest testament to SOFY MAJOR‘s ability to explore and evolve without losing its identity. Here, the band offer up what is undoubtedly their best songs to date and although every band will say that about their new record, SOFY MAJOR lives by it.

The creation of Total Dump was anything but easy. As the saying goes though, shit happens, and sometimes it happens in a big way whether it is on a personal or global level, hence the title… But the history of SOFY MAJOR has always been riddled with obstacles and setbacks and this time, the band could rely on a rejuvenated and solidified lineup to gut it out and enjoy a fruitful, creative process. All of this showed once they entered the studio, where sound wizard Dave Curran captured the magic. And it will show on stage. Following hundreds of shows across Europe, the UK, and the US, alongside Unsane, Pigs, Baroness, Big Business, Kylesa, and so many others, SOFY MAJOR is eager to deafen the masses again in 2019. Stay tuned for tour announcements in the weeks to come.
