MÖRGLBL: French Prog-Jazz Metal Trio To Release Seventh Album, The Story Of Scott Rötti, Through Free Electric Sound In February

While celebrating the band’s twentieth anniversary in 2018, France’s eclectic/progressive instrumental jazz metal fusion trio MÖRGLBL has completed their seventh full-length recording, The Story Of Scott Rötti. The album has been scheduled for release through their American allies at the Laser’s Edge Group, and the label’s Free Electric Sound imprint, on February 1st, and its cover art, track listing, and more have been issued.

Often described as Primus meets Steve Vai or The Beatles meet Pantera, MÖRGLBL‘s live performances veer toward the crazy by mixing substantial metal riffs with subtle jazz harmonies, deep pocket grooves, and their trademark goofball humor. Through two decades of performing and touring internationally and reaping well-earned critical acclaim from journalists around the globe on their six full-length albums, MÖRGLBL is an incredibly unique and creative musical force which transcends genre barriers and commands the attention of anybody into forward-thinking music with a lighthearted appeal.

Three years since the 2015 Free Electric Sound release of Tea Time For Pünks and having performed more than one hundred shows all around the world, MÖRGLBL celebrated twenty years of rocking the planet with their progressive jazz metal in 2018. A twentieth anniversary live DVD has been recorded and is pending release in 2019. While awaiting the DVD’s release, and while continuing to tour in support of Tea Time For Pünks, the band composed and recorded their seventh album, The Story Of Scott Rötti. With eleven new songs, the album showcases the band’s most achieved material to date, basing all the ingredients that have made the trio one of the most exciting combos of the genre.

The Story Of Scott Rötti was recorded at The Beat Factory during the Summer of 2018, mixed by Enzo D’Agostino at Elia Studio, mastered by Mobo at Conkrete Studio, and completed with artwork by Pierre Bernard and Peter Puke. The album will see release on CD and all digital platforms through Free Electric Sound on February 1st. Watch for audio samples, preorders, and more to be issued in January, and expect new tour dates for 2019 to be announced as well.

Led by guitarist Christophe Godin and bassist Ivan Rougny, MÖRGLBL gained an international following with the release of their first two albums in 1997 and 1998. Years of constant touring required the band take a break. By 2007 MÖRGLBL released Grötesk which drove their popularity all over the globe – particularly in the US – and was invited to perform at Europe’s famous Frank Zappa tribute festival, Zappanale.

MÖRGLBL shifted in late 2007, when drummer Aurélien Ouzoulias joined the band and kicked them into high gear, ultimately resulting in 2009’s highly acclaimed Jazz For The Deaf. 2008 saw MÖRGLBL become the smash surprise of NEARfest X, America’s largest progressive rock music festival, where the stunned audience gave a standing ovation and cheered through a double encore. Intensive touring throughout Europe, Russia, China, and the US followed right through 2012’s Brutal Romance album. Along the way, they shared the stage with the likes of Liquid Tension Experiment, Panzerballet, Freak Kitchen, Echoline, and Umphrey’s McGee.

PULCHRA MORTE: Decibel Magazine Premieres “Thrown To The Wolves;” Death/Doom Bringers To Release Full-Length Debut Via Ceremonial Records February 1st

Death/doom collective PULCHRA MORTE – featuring within its ranks current and former members of Wolvhammer, Eulogy, Harkonin, Withered, and more – will release its debut full-length, Divina Autem Et Aniles, this February via Ceremonial Records.

As a precursor to its release, Decibel Magazine is pleased to unveil the band’s “Thrown To The Wolves” video, offering of the release overall, “Breaking from expectation’s mold, the quintet eschew fast and furious death metal for the sort of elegant doom/death first oozed out by the Peaceville three with particular focus on Paradise Lost’s first two albums.”

Notes vocalist Jason Barron of the track, “‘Thrown To The Wolves’ is about two individuals in love but finding it impossible to be together. Both ultimate suffer from heartbreak and die of depression and loneliness from being apart.”

Divina Autem Et Aniles was captured by PULCHRA MORTE guitarist/renowned producer/engineer Jarrett Pritchard (1349, Goatwhore, Wolvhammer, Gruesome, Exhumed, Brutality, etc.) at his own New Constellation Studios in Orlando, Florida, mastered by Chris Common (Tribulation, Primordial, Exhumed, Gruesome), and features the vocal talents of former Eulogy co-conspirator Heather Dykstra and cellist Naarah Strokosch as well as additional backing vocals by Tor Stavenes, AKA Seidemann of 1349 and Svart Lotus. It all comes swathed in the striking cover art of Jordan Barlow (Goatwhore, Haarp, Psychon Vex).

Divina Autem Et Aniles will be released on February 1st on CD and digitally via Ceremonial Records and is available for licensing in various territories. For physical preorders visit the official PULCHRA MORTE bandcamp page at THIS LOCATION where first single “Soulstench” can be streamed.

Additionally, PULCHRA MORTE’s limited-edition seven-inch single featuring “Soulstench” on Side A and a rendition of Paradise Lost’s “The Painless” on Side B is still available in three color variants HERE.

PULCHRA MORTE (ˈpul.kʰra / ˈmɔr.te) began with an idea to recapture a feeling that has become increasingly scarce in the dense landscape of extreme music today: the manifestation of songs containing weight, atmosphere, and feeling. Forged by drummer/backing vocalist Clayton Gore and vocalist Jason Barron, formerly of St. Louis staple Harkonin, with guitarist Jeffrey Breden in 2017, the trio began writing songs with the intention of recapturing the purpose of greats from the late-’80s through early-’90s doom-laden death metal scene, a point where feeling superseded technicality. During this process, Gore contacted long-time friend and cocreator, producer/engineer Jarrett Pritchard, the two of them enjoying a thirty-year friendship and collaboration from the days of the seminal Tampa, Florida-based death metal band Eulogy.

Joining forces, the band completed the recording of their debut album Divina Autem Et Aniles with Pritchard taking on bass and auxiliary guitar duties as well as producing and engineering the album. Full rehearsals took place in Chicago over the summer of 2018, with Dylan Kilgore of Withered being recruited to play bass while Pritchard moved to full-time guitar. Band intact, the rehearsals yielded excellent results, and from these sessions a proper video for first single “Soulstench” was generated. In its wake, PULCHRA MORTE unleashed a limited edition seven-inch of “Soulstench” with a beautiful tribute to Paradise Lost – a cover of Gothic classic “The Painless” – occupying its B-side as an exclusive.

PULCHRA MORTE is planning a number of appearances throughout 2019 in support of Divina Autem Et Aniles and are already hard at work on the follow-up album.

DEATHCHANT: Cvlt Nation Debuts “Control” From Psychedelic Metal Unit; Self-Titled Full-Length To See Release Via King Volume Records Next Month

As the self-titled debut full-length from Los Angeles-based psychedelic metal unit DEATHCHANT draws ever closer to release, today Cvlt Nation offers up “Control” for public delight.

Issues the band of the track, “‘Control’ is about the police state we’re in and the assembly line-esque processing of new officers and existing officers being transferred all around to avoid termination or repercussions for illegal actions. The mental health degradation associated with paranoia, surrender, and fear as citizens and as those cops alike is an unnatural dehumanization… that’s the lyrical content anyway.”

Hear “Control” at Cvlt Nation HERE.

Deathchant was captured live over a two-day period at a secluded cabin in Big Bear, California, and manifests an immersive wall of noise-induced heavy metal mania that is equal parts paranoia and transcendental harmony.

The seven-track offering will be released on January 10th digitally and on vinyl via King Volume Records with Dune Altar handling the cassette edition. For preorders, visit the King Volume Badcamp page at THIS LOCATION where “Pessimist” and “Hex” can be streamed.

DEATHCHANT

“…volatile, exciting, and unpredictable…” — The Obelisk

“…what makes DEATHCHANT so unique is the ability to launch into experimental passages and then out again with nary a glance backward, maintaining the guise that they’ve been playing a standard heavy rock number the whole damn time.” — Sleeping Village Reviews

THE OBSESSED was formed in the late 1970s in Potomac, Maryland by legendary guitarist Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan). The band spawned in the realm of musicians/artists such as Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa, The Dictators, and The Stooges. The earliest lineup consisted of Wino, bassist Mark Laue, guitarist John Reese, and drummer Dave Flood. In 1983, Wino took over vocal duties and the band became a three-piece to record the Sodden Jackal EP.

The band broke up in the late ’80s after Wino moved to California to join Saint Vitus. At that time, a German label, Hellhound Records, and the booking agency that had signed Saint Vitus, released The Obsessed, originally recorded in 1985, prompting Wino to reform THE OBSESSED. After multiple lineup changes, the band signed to Columbia Records in 1994 to release their third and final album, The Church Within. Despite highly acclaimed reviews, THE OBSESSED would breakup following the release, seeing Wino forming Spirit Caravan (then Shine) and other projects.

In September 2011, THE OBSESSED returned to the stage at Roadburn Festival with The Church Within‘s legendary lineup (featuring Wino, Greg Rogers, and Guy Pinhas). The band played a few more reunion shows over the next couple years at Hellfest Open Air 2012 and Maryland Deathfest XI in May 2013 with bassist Reid Raley.

Wino announced the full-time return of THE OBSESSED in March 2016 and the band’s official signing to Relapse Records to record the follow up to The Church Within. The new lineup originally consisted of Spirit Caravan bassist Dave Sherman and Wino’s longtime friend and former road crew member Brian Costantino (drums). On October 31st, 2016, Wino announced another new lineup change for THE OBSESSED, including Bruce Falkinburg (bass) and Seraphim (guitar), making that the first time the band had been a four piece in over thirty-five years.

In the spring of 2017, THE OBSESSED unleashed Sacred, the band’s first studio album in over twenty years. With renewed energy and purpose, THE OBSESSED sounds heavier and more relevant than ever before. On Sacred, the band doubles down on enormous, heaving riffs and pummeling low-end across twelve tracks of eternal doom. Rounded out by Wino’s lyrical honesty and iconic throaty vocals, Sacred is an album that further pushes THE OBSESSED into the annals of heavy metal history, well worth the two-plus decade wait. The band performs once again as three-piece featuring Wino, Reid Raley and Brian Costantino.

“Scott ‘Wino’ Weinrich bringing THE OBSESSED back is assurance that what was sparked inside of him with another in-and-out round with Saint Vitus was no fluke…. This doom troubadour is made of iron and stone, and there’s no quit inside of him.” – Blabbermouth

“…the definitive take on an album that clearly laid a lot of the ground work for the current doom and stoner rock bands.” – Hellbound

“…some of the greatest doom songs ever recorded have come from Wino, and this album more specifically. The album has stood the test of time, and the re-issue was overdue and needed for the new generation of doom metal fans waiting for it.” – My Global Mind

THE OBSESSED will forever remain exalted because of their self-titled LP, a rare lightning rod of an album that helped straighten out doom when it needed it most.” – Dead Rhetoric

JESUS PIECE Announces West Coast North American January Tour Dates; Only Self LP Out Now Through Southern Lord

As their first tour through Japan wraps up this week, Philadelphia-based metallic hardcore outfit JESUS PIECE announces a run of late-January West Coast North American dates in support their vicious debut LP, Only Self, which saw release through Southern Lord in August.

JESUS PIECE recorded Only Self at Bricktop Recording Studio in Chicago with Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos, Like Rats, Dead In The Dirt), after which the album was mastered by Brad Boatrightat Audiosiege (Integrity, Nails, Xibalba) and completed with artwork by Dom Pabon. The album has ranked with the year’s heaviest hardcore releases and is now appearing on year-end lists abroad, including being crowned the #1 hardcore album of 2018 by Stereogum.

JESUS PIECE has toured mercilessly alongside Darkest Hour, Comeback Kid, Burn, Knocked Loose, Terror, Vein, Year Of The Knife, and many more across North America, Europe, and Japan this year. The new set of West Coast Demonstration 2019 tour dates is booked from January 22nd through 27th, with shows in Vancouver, Portland, Berkeley, Fullerton, and Las Vegas. JESUS PIECE will be joined by Gag and Vamachara on the US dates.

Only Self is out now on CD, LP, and digital formats through Southern Lord. Find physical order options at the label shop HERE and digital at Bandcamp HERE, iTunes HERE, and through all other digital providers.

JESUS PIECE West Coast Demonstration 2019:
1/22/2019 333 – Vancouver, BC
1/23/2019 Watershed PDX – Portland, OR w/ Gag, Vamachara
1/26/2019 Riff Mountain – Fullerton, CA w/ Gag, Vamachara
1/27/2019 American Legion Post 8 – Las Vegas, NV w/ Gag, Vamachara

JESUS PIECE is quickly developing a reputation as one of the heaviest, most uncompromising acts both on record and on the stage. With the brutalizing grooves of Disembodied, Turmoil, Harm’s Way, and labelmates Xibalba, the band incorporates elements of noise, ominous tones, and haunting atmospheres into their dynamic songwriting. With crushing, modern production, the eleven new tracks on their Only Self debut LP place JESUS PIECE among the scene’s darkest and heaviest acts and delivers one of the most anxiously-awaited albums of the hardcore/metal underground this year.

JESUS PIECE rage at the nexus of hardcore, death metal, industrial, and ’90s metalcore. They’re part of a new metalcore movement that proves that experimentation and succinct, clobbering riffs can not only coexist, but make for natural partners. On their first full-length, Only Self, they make the case that such should be the new tradition.” – Pitchfork

“Through clenched teeth, vocalist Aaron Heard sounds like an unhinged animal, ferociously tearing through drop tuning, d-beats, blasts and exaggerated breakdowns to create the ideal pied piper to lead us all down this path of hate and frustration.” – Revolver Magazine

“It’s unclear what’s in the American water these days (or perhaps the current political tenor makes it quite obvious…), but the United States is producing some of the best hardcore the country ever has. And Philadelphia’s JESUS PIECE might as well be the poster boys for the movement.” – Kerrang

“They’ve got a fat, bass-heavy attack that favors pure brutality over complexity. It’s the kind of thing that can seem like it exists just so angry kids have an excuse to go to a show and slam their bodies into each other for twenty minutes, but further listens reveal Only Self to be an album that’s a little more tasteful than that.” – Brooklyn Vegan

Captured at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida and produced by MORBID ANGEL with Erik Rutan, the record delivers eleven pieces of devastatingly dynamic death metal. Rolling Stone hailed a, “cyclone of blastbeat-driven fury punctuated with Azagthoth’s signature heaving, lunging grooves and Eddie Van Halen-on-a-bad-trip solos,” while Metal Injection crowned the record, “one of the band’s most essential efforts,” adding, “the record contains almost wall to wall instant classics, and is not only Steve Tucker’s best album as MORBID ANGEL frontman, but by extension the group’s most genre-defining effort since 1995’s iconic Domination.”

Orders for Kingdoms Disdained are currently available at THIS LOCATION.

“Featuring Trey Azagthoth‘s molten solos, the band rediscover what they did well across their career and double down on it.” – Pitchfork

“…very refreshing and gives the entire genre that shot in the arm it needs. There are no throw-away tracks, there’s no awkwardness and there’s no experimentation. It’s straight ahead aggressive metal… a dark record for the dark times we live in.” – Metal Insider

MORBID ANGEL‘s ability to manipulate sounds such that it seems it’s about to collapse and combust without ever doing so is nothing short of brilliant. For the devoted, it seems like magic…. Just incredible.” – Blabbermouth

“…the sound of a band doing their absolute best to recapture former glories without once sounding like a legacy act…” – Ghost Cult

“…the MORBID ANGEL rebirth fans have been waiting for.” – Exclaim!

DEATHGRAVE: San Jose Deathgrind/Punk Practitioners Unveil “So Real, It’s Now” Video; Record Out NOW Via Tankcrimes

San Jose deathgrind/punk practitioners DEATHGRAVE – featuring within its ranks members of Brainoiland Amber Asylum among others – are pleased to unveil the visual accompaniment to “So Real, It’s Now,” the title track off their latest full-length.

Issues the band, “No doctors or medication will help you when the visceral realization smacks you in the eardrum. With the help of our comrade, Alex Koll, ‘So Real, It’s Now’ has been visually brought to life. Studies have shown that this video will enhance your day in an extremely positive manner. Play daily to achieve nirvana.”

Adds Tankcrimes guru/label head Scotty Heath, “It’s a video that keeps giving till the very end.”

Get in on the insanity and peep “So Real, It’s Now” at THIS LOCATION.

DEATHGRAVE released its So Real, It’s Now debut in May via Tankcrimes. Hailed by Decibel for being a, “kaleidoscopic and engrossing mix of traditional brutality and audacious weirdness,” the fourteen-track production was captured at Earhammer Studios in Oakland (Necrot, Autopsy) by guitarist/renowned sound engineer Greg Wilkinson (Brainoil, ex-Laudanum, ex-Graves At Sea).

So Real, It’s Now is currently available on CD, vinyl, and digital formats. Tankcrimes recently repressed the LP edition (now available on limited-edition oxblood/silver vinyl). Digital orders are available at THIS LOCATION where the record can be streamed in its entirety. Find physical orders at the Tankcrimes Merch Table HERE.

Forged in 2013, DEATHGRAVE initially united as four friends with a simple need to play bleeding, belligerent, and pissed off grindcore/powerviolence in the vein of Siege, Rudimentary Peni, and Napalm Death with an Impetigo twist. Comprised of longtime scene veterans, DEATHGRAVE is Wilkinson alongside drummer Matt Thompson, bassist Fern Alberts (Amber Asylum, ex-Bird, ex-Ringwurm), and vocalist Andre Cornejo (Cyanic, ex-Bird, ex-Casket Blaster).

“…a kaleidoscopic and engrossing mix of traditional brutality and audacious weirdness, razor-sharp punk-infused deathgrind riffs and dissonant noise rock detours, high velocity jabs from an orthodox stance and crafty sucker punches you never see coming…” – Decibel

“Incorporating crust and never shying away from a slower doom break or a straight-up hardcore stomp, DEATHGRAVE‘s latest effort So Real, It’s Now is definitely more unique than the legions of post-Assück or Napalm worship. The Autopsy influence looms large, as do names like Grief, Doom, Siege, Spazz, and much more across the under thirty minutes and fourteen-tracks.” – Revolver

“…a wonderfully relentless slab of punky death grind that is as fun as it is furious” – Last Rites

If old-school grindcore played with passion and skill is your thing, then you absolutely need to check this out.” –Wonderbox Metal

You can smell the bile, taste the puke, and love every second of it.” – Metal Wanderlust

DEATHGRAVE hit it out of the park on their debut with music that’ll jiggle the old head’s man-jugs as well as their teenage kid’s rebellious frontal lobes. Very heavy and very ‘fuck you’ all the same.” – Grizzly Butts

“Grinding, crust-blasted hardcore that stops off for the occasional death metal pit stop. Everything sounds sunken and murky, possessed of a sullen grunt-and-plop that makes you think of something grim being dragged from a stinking bog…” – Collective ‘Zine UK

Daniel Shook of Meatwound and owner of Financial Ruin delves, “I was unloading gear at a show the first time I heard THUNDERCLAP. They were doing a quick sound check when I rolled up and by the end of the first song, I had stopped pulling guitars out and walked over to watch them. They were heavy and gross with the gnarliest vocals, but I had to finish getting the amps out, so I walked off. By the third song, I had abandoned loading in and was just watching the band. It was something like The Melvinsplaying Tom Petty songs as slow as possible. Or High on Fire covering Floor covers of Led Zeppelin. Like Roadhouse meets House Of 1000 Corpses. Texas Chainsaw Massacre relocated to the swamps of North-Central Florida. It was awesome.”

He continues, “It’s rare that I’m blown away by an unfamiliar band hearing them live for the first time but here we are. A couple years down the road and several shows together later, the band posts a pic of a CD that says, ‘Final Mix.’ I texted them asking what the plan is for its release; they’re not sure but they send me a copy. I’m soon playing the songs on repeat and they are stuck in my head. We strike a deal to split the release.”
