ATALA: West Coast Desert Doom Trio To Release The Bearer Of Light Full-Length Via Salt Of The Earth Records; “Desolate Lands” Video Now Playing, Tour Dates Announced + Preorders Available 4/20

West Coast desert doom trio ATALA will release their The Bearer Of Light full-length via Salt Of The Earth Records on May 21st.
Returning to their DIY ethos, the seven-track desert voyage was captured and self-produced in just five days at Gatos Trail in Joshua Tree with engineer Jeff Thomas. “It’s a true roller coaster of emotions: sad, angry, confused, lost… but, you can’t help but feel hope as you follow the journey,” notes founding guitarist Kyle Stratton.
“After working with producers who I admired,” Stratton continues of the decision to record The Bearer Of Light on his own, “I felt it was my time to do it my way while implementing some of the tricks they used. I wanted to record live and not overthink the process. I just wanted to capture the moment take by take. It was a learning process for both the band and myself as a producer. I literally had no idea what I was doing but I wanted the record to have a ’90s DIY feel like the stuff I grew up listening to and I think we achieved that.”
In advance of the release of TheBearer Of Light, ATALA is pleased to unveil their video for first single“Desolate Lands.” Issues Stratton of the clip, “‘Desolate Lands’ was written spontaneously in a jam and it was devastatingly heavy. Lyrically, it’s about the desert and our connection to the surrounding landscape and creatures. It’s about understanding that nature is the only true connection we have to any kind of a god or higher power. The video was created by our friend Zak Kupcha at Circulation Media. He did a great job.”

From Ashes to New and Ice Nine Kills Sellout Pittsburgh

Only being two dates into the co-headlining tour, these bands of force sold out The Rex Theater! When I had come into the venue, it was packed to the back. Unfortunately, I had missed the set HAWK, had done. Pittsburgh traffic can be killer, especially when there’s barely any parking from the show being sold out. When I had finally came in, I was lucky enough to experience part of Afterlife’s set. Not knowing what to expect from this band, I was thoroughly delighted.

Up next was Palisades. Only touching on them briefly prior to the show, I only knew about them through my sister. From time to time, she would play me their older albums. Before, I thought, “I could either go or go without this band”. Let me tell you, they put on a fantastic set. High energy and lots of interaction from the crowd.

Now on to the main two acts. Ice Nine Kills did the first half of this date for the co-tour. Can I just say how freaking amazing they were. I knew nothing of INK before coming into this show. I can most definitely say they’ve won over a new fan from the performance they had put on. Watching Spencer come onto the stage dressed up as half Freddy Kruger and half Jason. Not to mention the other members were dressed up as other horror characters too! I love bands with theatrics and themes behind them. It makes for such a more visually pleasing workup. Ice Nine Kills has a horror theme surrounding their looks and music. It totally shows on stage! This a must see band!

Lastly was From Ashes to New. FATN is a band with a lot of heart and soul. You can tell just by the way how they perform and how Matt raps out his part. During one the first few songs, he had mentioned how hard life has been for him as of late. But that the fans and his music keep him going. This is coming from a writer who’s struggled with depression herself, I felt what Matt was saying. Life can be extremely challenging at times. When you find that reason to keep you going through, it makes it all worth it in the end. If you like bands with heartfelt lyrics, you’ve found an amazing band to listen to.

All and all, I would say definitely check out this tour if you can! The line up is amazing just begging to be seen!

CHRCH released their towering Light Will Consume Us All full-length last year via Neurot Recordings. Across the record’s forty-four-minute run time, CHRCH layers intricate melodies, thunderous rhythms, monolithic riffs, and a commanding, supernatural vocal presence, performing with arresting purity and honesty. Their long-form songs build and deconstruct as the band reach sonic highs, and at times, beautiful plateaus. Traversing life’s journey of loss, reclamation and, ultimately, finding hope within the darkness, the music of CHRCH calls the listener to inhabit it, allowing enough room for its transmutation into anything one desires of it. Light Will Consume Us All was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Patrick Hills (King Woman, Bog Oak, VRTRA) at Earthtone Studios in Sacramento, California.
CHRCH’s Light Will Consume Us All is out now on CD, vinyl, and digital formats via Neurot Recordings. For physical order bundles visit THIS LOCATION. The digital edition can be purchased HERE where the record is also streaming in full.

SECTION H8: Phase One EP By Los Angeles Hardcore Punk Outfit Out Now Through Flatspot Records

Phase One, the pummeling debut EP from Los Angeles hardcore punk instigators SECTION H8, is officially out now through Flatspot Records. Comprised of members who also play in Downpresser, Minus, Product Of Waste, Human Garbage, Nomads, Furious Styles, and more, Phase One is a point-blank blast of unrelenting hardcore rage, unloading five tracks in barely eight minutes.
Recorded on Devils Night 2018 at The Pit by Taylor Young (Nails, Xibalba, Twitching Tongues), Phase One was mastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios (Full Of Hell, Iron Lung, Violent Reaction), and features guest synth and samples by Ryan George.
Following its initial independent release late last year, Flatspot Records now presents Phase One through official digital distribution on all platforms as well as 7″ with two variants, 300 on grey vinyl and 100 on red/black splatter.
Stream SECTION H8’s Phase One at THIS LOCATION.
Merch bundles and other ordering options can be found at the label’s webshop HERE and the EP is streaming and available on all digital platforms.
Following a recent West Coast tour, and a hometown record release show this week, SECTION H8 will announce new live actions in the weeks ahead.
Formed in early 2018, SECTION H8 quickly tore a hole in the hardcore/punk community, including being dubbed the “Best New Hardcore Band Of 2018” by No Echo. Inspired by brutal American hardcore acts like Cold As Life and early Madball, metal and grind acts including Carnivore and Driller Killer, and Japanese hardcore punk acts like Judgement and Death Side. Coalescing these influences into an energetic and merciless style of groove-carved hardcore punk, the band’s fury is fueled by their pessimistic outlook on society and the future of humanity. Their lyrical content depicts an impending apocalypse and humankind’s dedication to conflict, its unstoppable urge to destroy itself any way that it can — be it war or substance abuse or mankind’s inherit selfishness. It’s a soundtrack to the end times, in which we are now living.

THUNDERCLAP: PopMatters Streams Entire Debut Album From Florida Doom/Rock Trio; Inebriocean LP Out This Week Via Financial Ruin

PopMatters is now streaming the entire Inebriocean debut LP from Gainesville, Florida-based THUNDERCLAP, on the eve of the album’s release through Financial Ruin.
The trio’s members are Florida punk scene vets having collectively played with the likes of Discount, Army Of Ponch, The Draft, Unitas, J.Page, House On Fire, Black Cougar Shock Unit, and others, yet with THUNDERCLAP, the band smoothly melds elements of metal and classic rock into a thick layer of swampy southern groove and doom akin to bands like Torche, Red Fang, Royal Thunder, and Kylesa. Inebriocean was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ryan Williams at Black Bear Studios in Gainesville and completed with cover art by Ted Lincoln.
As their maiden album sees release this week, THUNDERCLAP‘s Ale Gasso offers, “The whole album plays on a theme-the Inebriocean. The ocean represents the darkness and despair of an inebriated life-nearly drowning yet thriving in a dangerous place where one has lost control. What begins as an invitation to debauchery on the title track, ‘What are you waiting for? Come to the edge. Dive in,’ quickly turns to darker times as drowning, shipwrecks and being lost out at sea come into play. The stories ebb and flow until ultimately ending with a touch of optimism with the last track ‘Breach’ which hints at brighter days ahead. The ocean works as a metaphor for a dark and dangerous life where one minute you can be enjoying yourself at the safety of shore, and the next you’re fighting your way out of a volatile sea.”
With the advance stream of Inebriocean, PopMatters writes in part, “The music contained on the album gives hints at the outfit’s punk rock origins but departs into deeper territory with flashes of Minus The Bear-style prog rock with weights tied to its ankles, southern rock, Black Sabbath-influenced doom while dealing up vocal hooks and catharsis-inducing riffs that beg to be heard live. If you don’t find yourself alternately scared and ready to raise your fist in victory at least twice a minute while listening to Inebriocean, there’s a good chance you’re not really living.”
Stream THUNDERCLAP’s Inebriocean LP early at PopMatters RIGHT HERE.
Financial Ruin will release Inebriocean on LP and digital platforms this Friday, March 29th, with distribution through Dead Tank Records. Find preorders for the LP HERE.
THUNDERCLAP is playing live throughout the area in the weeks surrounding the LP’s release, including their album release show on April 4th, and a set at the 352 Fest with labelmates Horsewhip and more just two weeks later, both in their hometown of Gainesville. Watch for more widespread tour dates to be announced in the weeks ahead.
4/04/2019 Loosey’s – Gainesville, FL *record release show w/ Iron Buddha, Heavy On The Ish [info]
4/19/2019 The Atlantic – Gainesville, FL @ 352 Fest w/ Party Time, Horsewhip, Wørsen [info]
Todd Rockhill and Danny Welsh originally formed THUNDERCLAP as a two piece in 2012, a time when Gainesville really didn’t have many heavy local bands. They aimed to fill that gap – to create the music they loved. Their music was influenced by metal bands like Judas Priest and Black Sabbath mixed with the down-tuned riffage of sludgy bands like Floor and Cavity. After a few songs were written, Rockhill was working on lyrics when he came upon a book of poems by Ale Gasso. Her dark poems fit the mood of the band and soon were set perfectly to the music. Bassist Jerome Goodman was added to the mix and they released their first record, The Moon Leads, in 2014. Gasso joined as guitarist shortly thereafter. When life took Goodman in a different direction, the band dropped the bass from their lineup and has remained sans-bass trio since, into the creation of their latest album and first LP, Inebriocean.
THUNDERCLAP combines poetry and music with different movements, tones, and emotions wrapped together to create a complete experience for listeners rather than just the average one-dimensional song. Breaking away from the traditional hardcore that permeated the scene at the time, they added layers of visual and conceptual feeling to the dark, heavy music which they felt properly reflected what they were feeling inside. Inebriocean is a journey, combining songs of varying lengths, moods and genres in order to replicate the true experience of life and art. The album’s seven lush tunes boast attributes of classic Southern rock and modern doom metal in a seamless blend of empowering riffs and emotive atmospheres.

From beginning to end, Posthuman is pure savagery and an early contender for one of the year’s heaviest albums.”

AORATOS: Gods Without Name Full-Length From Searing Black Metal Project Led By Naas Alcameth Of Akhlys And Nightbringer Out Now And Streaming Via Debemur Morti Productions

Gods Without Name is the first descent into the twisted depths of fresh creative entity, AORATOS. Spearheaded by Naas Alcameth known for his time in Akhlys, Bestia Arcana, and Nightbringer among others and described as a, “reflection of the eidola and egregore arisen from the liminal thresholds,” Gods Without Name probes deep into the darkness found beyond the boundaries of the profane and waking world of man. A maelstrom of mesmerizing and nightmarish tremolo riffs, relentless drumming, and the ever-tortured howls of Alcameth permeate this musical abyss serving accordingly as a piercing counterpoint to the undulating drone and dark ambient soundscapes found within. Cold atmospheres and malevolent whispers of ecstatic dread bookend these horrific hymnals to “forbidden plots, barren fields, and haunted abodes.” AORATOS Gods Without Name is true darkness given musical form in haunting, malefic black metal. Fans of Emperor, Nightbringer, Akhlys, Sinmara, and the like be forewarned.
AORATOS Gods Without Name — which was self-recorded at Promethean Forge Studios and mixed and mastered by Dave Otero (Cobalt, Cephalic Carnage, Cattle Decapitation) at Flatline Audio — is out now on CD, digital, and limited-edition vinyl formats via Debemur Morti Productions. ULCERATE: New Zealand Death Metal Trio Joins Debemur Morti Productions Roster; European Tour To Commence Next Month

New Zealand death metal trio ULCERATE have joined the Debemur Morti Productions roster.
Issues the band of the new union, “We are extremely happy to be moving head-first into this next chapter with a partnership that aligns so clearly with our own vision. Debemur Morti has always been in our peripheral gaze – the attention to detail and high level of curation is second-to-none.
Death metal has always had roots in themes of humanity, darkness, and oppression, but when ULCERATE formed in Auckland, New Zealand in 2000, their unconventional approach to the genre quickly redefined the meaning of those concepts throughout death metal and beyond. The trio’s distinctive treatment of dynamics alongside in-depth lyrical content established the band as a formidable force long before they became the standard-bearers for a new era of death metal, one defined by meticulous passages of understated melodic sensibilities and jarring, tooth-scraping dissonance. The band’s inexorable march from 2007’s Of Fracture And Failure (2007) to the unparalleled Shrines Of Paralysis (2016) has been terrifying. And it appears the best is yet to come.
Further details on the band’s as-yet-untitled new full-length will be released in the months to come. In the meantime, don’t miss ULCERATE on their upcoming European tour set to commence April 10thand run through April 21st. The trek includes an appearance on this year’s edition of Roadburn. THONAIN HORDE: Maryland Blackened Rock Outfit To Release Downfall Album Through Grimoire Records In May; Album Info And Preorders Posted

Grimoire Records confirms the May release of Downfall, the third album from Maryland-based THONIAN HORDE, founded by members of Admiral Browning, Pale Divine, Faith In Jane, Weed Is Weed, and Bailjack. The Downfall cover art, track listing, and preorders have been issued.
THONIAN HORDE formed in 2016 in the backwoods of Boonesboro, Maryland by bassist/vocalist Ron “Fezz” McGinnis (Pale Divine, Admiral Browning), guitarists Darren “Dirty” Waters (Weed Is Weed) and Dan “D-Mize” Mize (Faith In Jane), and drummer Tyler “The Beast” Lee (Weed Is Weed). As a self-described “black & roll” outfit, the band seamlessly blends stoner rock grooves with scathing vocals ripped straight from the frostbitten black metal tundra, but what sets them apart from their peers is the highly acrobatic death metal drum work perforating the mix. Since recording their second album, Inconnu, with Grimoire Records in 2017, the band has spent little idle time in the intervening years.
Downfall is THONIAN HORDE‘s third album release since 2016, and second proper full-length release with Grimoire Records. Featuring ten new tracks of thrashy, blackened, metallic rock, fans of Immortal, Satyricon, and Dissection, as well as the stoner/doom throngs who frequent the members’ other projects, will all find something to sink their teeth into. Like Inconnu, the tracking for Downfall was done mostly live in the Grimoire Studio with label head Noel Mueller, with minimal overdubbing. The cover art was again provided by Gilbert Miranda for Lingua Mortis Artwork, and the CD layout was finished by Mueller.
Downfall will be released via limited edition CD and digital download on May 24th through Grimoire Records. Preorders are now live HERE. Audio samples, live performances, and more will be posted over the weeks ahead.
Downfall Track Listing:
1. The Narcissist
2. Cathedral Spire
3. Cold Blooded Hypocrisy
4. Gremalkin
5. Hymn To Lilith
6. Chaos Theory Magick
7. Bring The Pain
8. Brickstorm
9. Pan 131
10. Downfall
