GHOUL The Band… Now, GHOUL The Comic Book!

GHOUL.jpeg

Calling all GHOULunatics! They’ve splattered the stage, now they’re going to splatter the page…GHOUL is starring in their own comic book and it’s being launched with a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter!
GHOUL: Born To Kill is a horror anthology that takes place in GHOUL‘s home country of Creepsylvania. It features GHOUL, some regular characters from their stage show, as well as other Creepsylvanian murderers, mutants, and monsters. The whole book was written and drawn by Ross Sewage, who some may know as the bass player for death metal bands Exhumed and Impaled.
“I love GHOUL‘s music and I love their very real, very true backstory,” said Sewage. “I thought comic books would be a great medium to get more tales from Creepsylvania into the hands of their rabid fans. Kickstarter seemed like the perfect place to let those rabid fans take part in bringing it to life. If this goes well, hopefully there’ll be more to come!”
GHOUL is equally excited about jumping into a new medium. “Ross who?” said Cremator of GHOUL. “Oh yeah, that guy who got me super drunk that one night. He pumped me for some stories about home. I guess he drew a comic book or something.”
The GHOUL comic book Kickstarter campaign features GHOUL related rewards, such as art prints, stickers and buttons, custom painted GHOUL drumheads, and an exclusive t-shirt design. SUNN O))) Announces The Release Of Pyroclasts, Confirmed For Release Through Southern Lord On October 25th; Trailer Posted

SUNN O___ Electrical Audio 45 web _photo by Joshua Ford_.jpg

SUNN O))) will release Pyroclasts through Southern Lord on October 25th. The album’s cover art, track listing, and a trailer have been issued.

The Pyroclasts album is the result of a daily practice which was regularly performed each morning, or evening during the two week Life Metal sessions at Electrical Audio during July 2018, when all of the days musical participants would gather and work through a twelve-minute improvised modal drone at the start and or end of the day’s work. The piece performed was timed with a stopwatch and tracked to two-inch tape, it was an exercise and a chance to dig into a deep opening or closing of the day’s session in a deep musical way with all of the participants. To connect/reconnect, liberate the creative mind a bit and greet each other and the space through the practice of sound immersion. The players across the four pieces of Pyroclasts are Tim Midyett, Tos Nieuwenhuizen, Hildur Guðnadóttir, and as always, SUNN O)) founders Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson.
The music on Pyroclasts is inextricably woven to Life Metal. It exists on the very same tape reels, was explicitly recorded by Steve Albini. The brightness and vividness of that glorious session glares through these four tracks, the precision and radiance, prismatic lustrousness of the saturation, the elemental sculptural shapes, the abstract renderings. It is a sister, or perhaps a shadow album. Or perhaps the now apparent miasma or aether. But it also exists in a form of a pause, a time space which exist in between and around the compositional structures of SUNN O)))‘s titanic works.
For the listener or recipient/participant there are deep rewards within the patience of pulling down the walls and letting the music feel and feel the music. To be immersed will reveal great detail and color, clarify image, encourage a depth of focus and stillness which may lead to a quite profound experience. Sitting inside the space of time. A deep form of elementalism, even atomism, and connection with presence moment, time and reality.
SUNN O))) would invite our audience to consider these points of perception when experiencing and listening to Pyroclasts. SUNN O))) would also invite and encourage their audience to use Pyroclastsasa lens to review and re-experience the complexity of the Life Metal album, and even to interrupt its sequence with Pyroclasts. This elaboration can bring the astute listener both abyssal, hallowed rewards.
Pyroclasts was recorded and mixed by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio on two-inch tape July 2018 and mastered by Matt Colton through all analogue AAA process at Metropolis July 2019. Four of Samantha Keely Smith’s incredible consciousness memory landscapes grace the album sleeve artwork.
Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson would like to dedicate this album to the memories of Ron Guardipee, Kerstin Daley, and Scott Walker.

Interview with NYC’s Steele

Interview and written and conducted by Tess Casto

S1

How did your music journey begin?

When I was a wee lad (around 3 years old) my dad bought me a pair of Pro-Mark Ringo drum sticks and would lay newspaper out on the cushion of an armchair and put on the Tears for Fears “Best of” for me to beat along to. Slowly as I got older I was introduced to a real drum kit and started drumming in bands with my older sisters friends when I was 12. More recently I’ve taught myself guitar and bass and started writing my own material.

Were there any notable influences such as family or bands/musicians?

My dad, my mom, and their broad collection of CDs.

Being in “The Britanys” how would say this has impacted your sound?

I learned a lot about songwriting and melody through writing as committee w the boys. Just from watching Lucas orchestrate ideas, I’ve grown a lot.

Since having a solo project, how does it differ from being in a band full of other members?

It’s more introspective because I’m just sat alone with headphones. Both are different enough experiences to stay fresh and influence one another. In one, you get the joy of collaborating with others and making something special, with the other you get free reign to make something fully personal. Both are nice.

What’s your favorite part about being in the music industry?

Good question. I’m not sure there’s any logic in why I want to be a part of it, but I haven’t gotten a “real” job yet.

Since you live in NYC, do you have any favorite concert venues there?

MSG baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?

Brian Eno, that’s my rock n roll pope~

Lastly, are there any upcoming releases we should be on the lookout for?

Gonna start playing live in September and release two more songs in the next few months. Just made merch, DM 4 one!!

Between The Buried and Me and The Contortionist at Rex Theater

BTBAM, The Contortionist, and Nick Johnston stopped at the Rex Theater in Pittsburgh on their most recent tour. The following lineup was a “progressive” powerhouse.

Nick Johnston was on before the main acts came on. My favorite part about going into this show was the fact I didn’t hear his studio releases prior. I love being surprised and that’s exactly what happened. Nick put on such a fantastic half-hour set. It felt so much shorter than half an hour. I hope to see him again on tour soon!

4.jpg

Up next was The Contortionist. Being formed by in 2007 and hailing Indianapolis, Indiana, this progressive band has been making their stride for over a decade. Releasing four albums and a mass of EPs, their discography offers a selection for everyone. Half of the list were songs from their most recent album “Clairvoyant”. Then the latter was from their previous works. The overall set moved at a delightful pace.

1.jpg

Last but not least, Between The Buried and Me. Another band native to the USA, BTBAM are based out of Raleigh, North Carolina. Starting out in 2000, the band has seen many lineup changes but still has continued on strong with two of the original members Rogers (lead vocals/keyboard) and Waggoner (lead guitar/backing vocals). The setlist mainly compromised of songs from both “The Parallax II: Future Sequence” and “Automata II”.  Though the set was made up of twelve songs, the beautiful attribute that has made progressive bands different from the rest is that their songs are quite longer than the normal song.

All and in all, the artists and bands did a magnificent job. Its been quite a while since I’ve been to a prog show, and I was not disappointed!

THE PRIMALS: Video For “Hello Cruel World” Video Premiered At Louder Than War; West Coast Tour Dates With Cave In And Helms Alee Announced

Los Angeles-based rock trio THE PRIMALS – founded by vocalist/guitarist John Henry (also of Darkest Hour), bassist Chad Fjerstad (formerly of Dead To Fall), and drummer Andrew Black (formerly of The Explosion) – has shared a new video for the track “Hello Cruel World,” through a premiere at Louder Than War. The new video hits as the band announces November tour dates with Cave In and Helms Alee.

“Hello Cruel World” is found on THE PRIMALS‘ debut album All Love Is True Love, out now on Southern Lord. Featuring ten infectious tracks produced by John Reis (Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes) and completed with cover art by Laura K. Giron, the band’s fuzzy execution is equal slabs ripping guitar heaviness and infectious pop sensibility on All Love Is True Love. Concocted by a seasoned group of thrashers with a historical backbone in the D.C. punk community, the disintegrated spirit of grunge rises from the ashes, revitalized in a new light.

The footage from THE PRIMALS‘ “Hello Cruel World” video was gathered during the band’s debut visit to Europe earlier this year.

NIGHTFELL To Release A Sanity Deranged Through 20 Buck Spin In September; “The Swallowing Of Flies” Single Now Streaming

20 Buck Spin presents A Sanity Deranged, the monolithic third album from Portland, Oregon’s NIGHTFELL. Offering the first new material since 2015’s highly regarded Darkness Evermore LP, A Sanity Deranged delivers the band’s most crucial and damaging music to date. Alongside the cover art and track listing, the advance lead single “The Swallowing Of Flies” has been posted for streaming.

NIGHTFELL is the creation of Todd Burdette (Tragedy, His Hero Is Gone, Warcry) and Tim Call (Mournful Congregation, Sempiternal Dusk, Weregoat). Returning like a phantom four years after Darkness Evermore enveloped the planet, the all-consuming thunderstorm that is NIGHTFELL‘s A Sanity Deranged is loosed upon a world in fractured turmoil. A dark metal dirge of madness, an anthem to those immemorial and a sonic bloodletting of vitriol and contempt, A Sanity Deranged is NIGHTFELLat its most spitefully deliberate.

A Sanity Deranged is a pinnacle to this point of the disparate sounds that shape the cohesive discordance of NIGHTFELL. Slicing ice cold texture cuts like obsidian glass amidst the monumental death crush and grim wallow of doomed dejection. The heart has remained as defiant and vigilant as ever, but the old flesh has been shed and a beast reborn rears forth – jaws dripping, teeth gnashing, shedding the withered exoskeleton for an adherent body.

Recorded and mixed together with Greg Wilkinson at Earhammer Studios (High On Fire, Asunder, Vastum, Ulthar) with additional instrumentation and vocals tracked by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Melvins), the NIGHTFELL duo evokes their most dense and dynamic recording yet.  A sharpened blade of iron and steel forged in the fires of tumult, A Sanity Deranged is the annihilating vanguard for the end times now upon us all.

Hear the advance lead single from A Sanity Deranged, “The Swallowing Of Flies,” through YouTube HERE and Bandcamp HERE.

NIGHTFELL‘s A Sanity Deranged will see release on LP, CD, and digital formats through 20 Buck Spin on Friday, September 13th, including a special limited gold/brown galaxy color vinyl configuration available to record stores. Fans of Bolt Thrower, Misthyrming, Mayhem, Amebix, Tragedy, Primordial, and Neurosis should be on watch for A Sanity Deranged.

In the studio, all NIGHTFELL music is written and performed by Todd Burdette and Tim Call, while the live lineup is comprised of Burdette on guitar and vocals and Call on drums, with guitarist Vince Blank and bassist Derek Willman. Stand by for NIGHTFELL live appearances to be scheduled throughout 2019 and 2020.

A Sanity Deranged Track Listing:

1. No Life Leaves Here
2. (As Now) We Must Succumb
3. To The Flame
4. The Swallowing Of Flies
5. (Holiness Digested)
6. Sanity Deranged

DEAD TO A DYING WORLD: Dark Metal Septet Begins East Coast Tour This Week; Elegy LP Out Now Through Profound Lore

Texas-based dark metal septet
DEAD TO A DYING WORLD this week embarks on their East Coast tour, continuing to tour in support of their acclaimed Elegy opus, which saw release through Profound Lore Records in April.

DEAD TO A DYING WORLD‘s Elegy is a foretelling of a post-human world which explores themes of loss, grief, and the dawn of a new ecology through the eyes of a lone wanderer. The last human grieves the end of humanity, reflecting on the temporal insignificance of man and the sixth extinction caused by the Anthropocene – the end of our kind brought about by our own hubris, greed, and desire for power over one another. Elegy marks the third chapter in the trilogy, which explores our relationship to our world by reflecting on our past, present, and impending future.

Produced by Billy Anderson, Elegy stands as one of the most riveting productions from the acclaimed producer in recent times. The album sees the band’s seven full-time members welcoming contributions from a small cast of guest musicians, including Thor Harris (ex-Swans, Thor & Friends), Jarboe (ex-Swans), Dylan Desmond (Bell Witch), and Emil Rapstine (The Angelus), Pablo C. Urusson (Sangre de Muerdago), and Tim Duffield (ex-Sans Soleil). The new contingent of guests helps elevate the narrative of Elegy to a new plateau.

DEAD TO A DYING WORLD‘s new tour will begin in Chicago this Saturday, July 20th followed by shows in Pittsburgh, Richmond, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Washington, Asheville, and New Orleans through July 27th. In addition to the band’s already sprawling lineup, DEAD TO A DYING WORLD will be joined by guest musicians Emil Rapstine from The Angelus on vocals (who also toured with them on the recent West Coast run), and Zach Jobin from Cleric and Tyrannosorceress on percussion.

Elegy available through Profound Lore Records on 2xLP, CD, and digital platforms via the label webshop HERE via Bandcamp HERE. Also see the video for “Syzygy” at THIS LOCATION.
